Wichita Airport Car Rental

Wichita Mid-Continent Airport Background…

The Wichita Mid-Continent Airport is one of the few post World War II airports created in the United States. It was built because the United States Air Force took over the previous Wichita Municipal Airport after World War II and turned it into McConnell Air Force Base in 1951. The new airport, built over near two thousand acres of land, took about three years to build and was completed in 1953- although the air traffic services from the original Wichita Municipal Airport didn’t carry over until 1954.

The airport was renamed in 1973 when the Mid-Continent Airport that was being used in Kansas City at the time was renamed to Kansas City International Airport. Two concourses were added along with ten gates in 1976, two more gates were added when the ticketing area was renovated in 1985, and the last renovation cost six million dollars in 1989 when the terminal was completely redone. The airport has continued to grow beyond expectations despite the downtrodden economy in the early twenty-first century, servicing one and a half million passengers each year.

Wichita Mid-Continent Airport Car Rentals…

All eight major national car rental agencies, Avis, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty, are represented on-site at the airport. Their counters are located next to the baggage claim area, where you will also find courtesy phones that can be used to contact any local off-site car rental companies you can locate.

After signing the final paperwork and rental agreement, you’ll be able to pick up your rental car just outside the baggage claim area.  And, as of recently, the cars were parked into two different rental car parking areas.  Some were grouped in front of the terminal and some were grouped beside – or adjacent – to the terminal.  Just check with your agent to make sure of the exact location for pick-up and drop-off.

Wichita Airport Directions to Wichita Downtown…

There are six different exits that lead out of the airport. Regardless of whichever one you choose to take, you’ll end up at a corner where you can turn right onto W Kellogg St, also known as State Highway 54. Follow the road until you reach the Central Business District exit and you’ll have made it to the downtown area of Wichita soon after your wheels clear the off-ramp.

Gas stations are sparsely spread out around the airport. The closest one you’ll find is a Flying Eagle on S Mid Continent Rd. Take a right onto the road from W Kellogg St (instead of exiting left into the airport area), refuel, then turn around and you’ll be able to take S Mid Continent Rd right into the airport.

Another added benefit of turning into this area is that you’ll be close to a Freddy’s Fast Food Restaurant.  Freddy’s is a burger joint in the mold of a Steak n’ Shake.  Flat-top burgers and extremely thin fries always go well with custard (ice cream).  You can get in and out for less than $10 – including the custard.  When you’re done, go wash your hands and drive your rental back to the airport.

Other Airport Amenities…

The airport is pretty modernized, coming equipped with free Wi-Fi that is accessible through the SSID “free”. The airport offers the usual gift shop and food services that you can find at most airports. There are also ATMs, a postal service, shuttles to and from nearby hotels, taxis, overnight parking, etc. Also, Wichita is kind of out in the middle of Kansas all by itself, which leads to a personal favorite extra amenity of mine, locally grown employees. Most of the employees are from the area, born and raised, and can give you a lot of good tips for an enjoyable vacation if you’re able to strike up a friendly conversation with them. Just make sure you don’t get them in trouble with their bosses.

Other Car Rental Options at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport…

All your basic vehicles are covered at the airport. You can get your typical four-door sedans, some two-door coups, an SUV, and even a few trucks. If you want a specific model you’ll have to call ahead and make a reservation or risk not getting the car you want. With more than one and a half million passengers, you’re looking at quite a bit of competition. Luckily the airport stays fairly well stocked. Enjoy your time in Wichita, and don’t forget to fulfill your full/full fuel policy by refilling nearby.
