Vienna Airport Car Rental

Vienna Airport Basics.....

The Vienna Airport is the busiest airport in the country of Austria.  Handling close to 20 million passengers per year, this airport also ranks near the top 20 in all of Europe as well.  New additions are scheduled for 2015 because of the increase in traffic over the last few years.  Expected passenger count is expected to continue to rise over the next few years.

Vienna Airport Car Rental.....

Several car rental companies have desks set up at the Vienna Airport.  These include Europcar, Avis, Budget, EasyMotion, Hertz, Sixt and UnionCar.  Each company has had an established presence in the area and should provide for you a great service at a decent price.  Each car rental company has an office set up in the arrivals area near the terminal exit.

Cars are situated on the airport premises, so you won't need a shuttle service to get to the actual vehicles.  There is a rental car parking area that you can get to from walking out of the front of the terminal.  As you exit one of the terminals, you will want to walk past the NH Airport hotel and continue to the right.  If you are still unable to find it, simply ask the car rental agent the directions.  It will be easy for you to find.

After getting in your rental car, you are most likely headed to Vienna.  Exit via the Ausfahrtstrasse, or exit road.  Follow signs and take the ramp onto the A4.  Drive about 500 meters and then Keep left at the fork and follow signs for A4/Wien and merge onto A4.  You will then drive about 14 km right into the heart of Vienna.  The total drive from the airport to the city center of Vienna will be approximately 17 km.

When returning your rental vehicle, we generally recommend that you simply reverse the directions above.  Also, don't forget to re-fuel your vehicle - especially if your fuel policy on your rental car is a full/full policy.  This simply means that you leave with a full tank and are responsible for bringing the rental vehicle back to the airport with a full tank.  There is a service station on the airport premises to help you out with that.  If you don't want to fill up at the airport, you could certainly re-fuel in Vienna, given the closeness to the airport.

Hotels Near the Vienna Airport.....

We have picked out for you a couple of hotels near the airport.  Each has its benefits, and each has drawbacks as well.

NH Vienna Airport Hotel - If you're looking for convenience this is probably the one.  Prices start near the 125 EUR range (before VAT) and go up from there.  Breakfast (which is pretty decent but very expensive at almost 20 EUR) and Wi-Fi will be extra, but considering the location, this is a pretty good value.  What many travelers notice is that the lobby and entrance area looks great.  The rooms, on the other hand, are not so great.  If you don't really want to shell out the high prices for food, we recommend that you walk back to the airport terminal and eat at the McDonald's restaurant before security.  You can pick up free Wi-Fi there as well.

City Hotel Albrecht - If you're looking for a superb breakfast at a hotel that is not quite so close to the airport as the NH above, you might check out the City Hotel Albrecht.  This facility is a few km from the hotel, but you might expect a little better overnight stay here than you would at the NH Vienna Airport Hotel.  If you're arriving at the hotel after 10 pm the hotel offers an electronic key system that works quite well.  The staff is excellent, and Wi-Fi is free (not something you can say about the NH Vienna Airport Hotel).  You could take a cab from the airport or you could get there via rental car fairly easily.  The total drive is about 7 km from the airport.

Vienna Airport Amenities.....

The Vienna Airport has some pretty good food choices, especially at the cafeteria.  There is a good selection and the food is fresh.  The boarding areas are pretty small, but they seem efficient.  There is free Wi-Fi throughout the airport.

Nearby Car Rental Attractions.....

Sometimes we attempt to identify an attraction near the airport that rental car drivers might be interested in seeing.  One such location is the Zentralfriedhof cemetery, the most famous of all cemeteries in Austria.  This huge cemetery was developed and began in the later 1800's and hosts a memorial for Mozart (his body is actually buried at another location) and other classical composers throughout the years.  The cemetery is situated between the Vienna Airport and the actual city of Vienna.  You will exit off of A4 to the Southwest to get to the cemetery.

Car Rental Types at the Vienna Airport.....

First, you should know that car rental prices at the Vienna Airport are relatively high.  Why?  Everything in Vienna is expensive I suppose, including fuels that power car rentals so don't be surprised when you see the total charges.  Having said that, you'll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper rate online than Euro Car Rental - especially as we compare all of the car rental choices at the Vienna Airport.  Cars at the airport include (but are certainly not limited to) economy cars, standard vehicles, SUV's, luxury cars, minivans and minibuses and even convertibles at times.  Be sure to pre-book before arriving at the airport to reserve the type of vehicle that you want.

Also, you can add on certain items when reserving your rental car.  Snow equipment, additional drivers and GPS's are usually available to tack on to your car rental booking, for an extra fee.  Sometimes discounts are run on the add-ons to entice potential renters to entice you to increase the value of the rental.
