Victoria BC International Airport Car Rental

Victoria International Airport Background…

Having officially existed in 1914, the airport was one of the first within Canada’s borders. It started as little more than a grass airstrip and was used primarily as a military training base for Air Force pilots. The airport was able to accommodate flying boats during the 20s and 30s due to its proximity to Patricia Bay, which gave the airport its first unofficial name, Pat Bay Airport. The airport primarily served the military until the Department of Transportation took it over a couple years after World War II end. The Royal Canadian Air Force officially moved out in 1952.

When the Department of Transportation received control of the airport in 1948 it officially named it Victoria Airport. In 1959, when international flights became a possibility and the airport received port of entry status, the name was changed to Victoria International Airport. Today the airport is one of the top ten busiest airports in Canada, serving just under half a million passengers each year.

Victoria International Airport Car Rentals…

The airport’s passengers are served by four on-site car rental agencies. All four are internationally renowned and have counters located within the Arrivals area of the main terminal across from the Information Desk. The four on-site companies are Avis, Budget, Hertz and National. If none of those companies are your style, Enterprise offers its services off-site located at 9429 Canora Rd in Sidney. All you have to do to take advantage of Enterprise’s services is call ahead of time for a pick-up by their free shuttle at the crosswalk just outside the Arrivals area. If you’re having a hard time locating the counters amongst the throng of passengers just locate a nearby directory or ask an employee for help.

The on-site vehicles are situated right near the terminal.  When you walk out of the front of the terminal, simply turn to your right.  The car rental parking area is situated just to the right of the terminal.  Overhead blue signs indicate the rental car parking area – on the other side of the hedges.

Victoria Airport Directions to Sydney…

The main city closest to the airport is Sidney, a major coastal town near the end of the British Columbia peninsula. To get to the downtown area of Sidney you’re going to have to drive out of the airport via Electra Blvd and turn left onto Willingdon Rd. When you reach the roundabout one kilometer down Willingdon Rd you’ll want to take the first exit you come across, E Saanich Rd, and follow it until you reach McTavish Rd. Turn right onto McTavish Rd and prepare yourself for  a roundabout nightmare .

Continue straight through the first roundabout, take the second exit at the next, and finally take the third exit at the last which will effectively cause you to do an elongated U-turn then turn right onto Patricia Bay Highway/BC-17 N. After a little less than two kilometers turn right onto Beacon Ave, left onto Resthaven Dr, right onto James White Blvd and left onto 4th St. After making all those quick turns you’ll find yourself in Downtown Sidney and be ready to explore the British Columbia peninsula to your heart’s content.

Victoria Airport Directions to Victoria…

To get to the beautiful city of Victoria, simply travel out of the airport parking lot and follow the overhead signs directing you to Victoria at the first traffic circle.  After driving about 1 more km, you’ll come to your next traffic circle.  Take the first right onto E Saanich Rd and drive for about 600 meters.  You’ll come to a stoplight – turn left on McTavish Rd at the stoplight.  Soon, you will arrive at another traffic circle and you should follow the overhead green signs to Victoria.  Merge onto Patricia Bay Hwy/BC-17 S and travel all the way to the city of Victoria.

The closest gas stations are located in the mess of streets just east of the airport along Canora Rd. If you take Patricia Bay Highway back you’ll run into a roundabout just as you exit the off-ramp. Take the first exit and you’ll find yourself on Canora Rd. Otherwise, follow the directions backwards and refuel at the Shell located on the corner of E Saanich Rd and McTavish Rd.

Restaurants Near the Victoria Airport in B.C…

You have a great little choice when it comes to eating near the airport.  Using the directions above traveling to Victoria, you will approach McTavish Rd at a stoplight before getting too far from the airport.  Instead of turning left on McTavish, you will go thru the stoplight and take an immediately right into a restaurant called The Roost Farm Bakery.  By all accounts, the Roost Farm serves up some pretty tasty sandwiches created out of local ingredients.  Pick up a loaf of bread on your way into the city, or your way back to the airport.  Don’t forget the desserts either.  Many folks report a wonderful experience here.

A Word About Traffic Circles…

Traffic circles (roundabouts) plague the city, meaning you need to be well versed in roundabout etiquette or else you’ll risk causing an accident. There are two main rules to follow when traversing roundabouts. Always yield to traffic that is already on the roundabout and always signal when you are exiting the roundabout. Make sure you follow those rules and don’t turn the wrong way onto the roundabout and you be just fine.

Other Car Rental Options at Victoria International Airport…

Both Budget and Avis offer hand control units for handicapped individuals. However, Budget requires a twenty-four hour notice and Avis requires a forty-eight hour notice for individuals who need such a special need to be met. All the car rental companies cover the typical bases, meaning just about any vehicle you could reasonably ask for is supplied by one company or another. However, they don’t have a limitless supply of vehicles so I highly recommend you place your reservation as quickly as possible.
