To get to Trondheim from the airport is fairly easy. The total trip distance is about 35 km from the airport and around 40 minutes car rental driving time. It does have toll roads, so you need to be prepared.
You want to make your way out of the airport going towards E6 to Trondheim. You'll approach a fork in the road and you'll want to stay on the road going straight. You'll merge onto E6 for a beautiful 29 km drive. You want to be looking for exit 38 going towards towards Lerkendal/Risvollan/Othilienborg. Take the exit to the right. At the first traffic circle, take the first exit and get on Fv860/ Torbjørn Bratts veg. You'll see a building with a byavisa sign on the far side of the road.
At the next traffic circle, take the third exit on Fv864/Strindvegen. You'll turn right on Holtermanns veg and you'll go under a pedestrian walkway bridge right after the turn. Holtermanns veg turns into Elgeseter Gate which turns into Elgeseter bru and then finally Prinsens Gate. Then make a right onto onto Bispegata and another left on Munkegata and you are in Trondheim.
To get back to the airport with your rental vehicle, just reverse the directions above and you'll be fine. But remember to re-fuel your rental car before returning.
