Tromso Airport Car Rental.....

The Tromso Airport has 5 car rental companies to satisfy your needs.  They will even deliver your car warm and ice free during the cold winter months.  Pick-up and drop-off is very easy right next to the terminal building for convenience.  The companies include Avis, Sixt, Budget, Europcar and Hertz.

Getting to Tromso via rental car is pretty easy.  It is a quick drive from the airport.  It's a short 6 km and takes around 15 minutes to get into town.

After picking up your rental car you want to head out on Flyplassvegen toward Flyplassvegen/Rv862.  Leaving the airport you'll enter a traffic circle and you'll want to take the third exit onto Flyplassvegen/Rv862.  You'll stay on this road for 1 km.  You will then want to veer off to the right staying on Rv862.  You will be completely bypassing the traffic circle.  To the left as you get on the road you'll see a big building with an ICA Supermarked sign.  You are going to be going through 3 traffic circles and will drive for 3.7 km.  You'll be passing through a short tunnel as you get close to Strandvegen.  You'll also see the coast straight ahead.   Make a left on Strandvegen.  Strandvegen turns into Storgata.  Drive a little ways and you're in the center of Tromso.

Getting back to the airport from Tromso, you will bascially reverse the directions above.  Remember to re-fuel your rental car before returning the car back to the Tromso Airport.  There is a Shell station at the corner of the Storgata Road and the Peder Hansan Gate.  If you follow the directions above, you can't miss it.  It sits on the left leaving Tromso to the airport, and on the right as you enter Tromso from Strandvegen.  Other service stations exist near Tromso, but you'll have to search them out.  Service stations are more sparse in Norway than they are in America.

Other Tromso Airport Notes.....

The Midnight sun is prominent in this region. Because of it's location, twilight is indefinite and there isn't any darkness between April through August. In reverse, the Polar Night is also evident from November to January. The sun actually isn't visible between this time.

Tromso is smack dab in the middle of the Northern Lights zone. It's by far one of the very best places in the world to view this phenomena. The planet's rotation positions the area into this zone at 6pm and then it is out again at midnight.  Because of the constant light during spring and summer, the Northern Lights aren't visible during this time.

Other places to visit in Tromso in your rental car are the Polar Museum, The Verdensteatret which is Norway's oldest functioning cinema and the Tromso Cathedral.
