Stephenville Airport Car Rental

Stephenville International Airport Background…

The airport started in 1941 when the United States received the rights to construct an Army Air Force base around St. George’s Bay. The ninety-nine year lease and construction on the airport started in April 1941. The base was originally called Stephenville Air Base, but in 1947, when the United States created its own separate air force branch of the military, the base was renamed Ernest Harmon Air Force Base after an Army Air Corps ace who died in an air accident in 1933.

Commercial operations at the airport started in 1957, when Canada’s Department of Transportation, which was the precursor to Transport Canada, created a civilian terminal. Nine years later the United States closed the Air Force Base and the airport was picked up by Stephenville Airport Corporation Inc. The airport is currently one of five in Canada designated as a suitable emergency landing zone for a space shuttle and it played host to three thousand stranded passengers when airspace to the United States was restricted during September 11th, 2001.

Stephenville International Airport Car Rentals…

There are two car rental agencies that offer their services to the passengers of Stephenville International Airport on a daily basis, Budget and National. Both companies are located on-site around the baggage claim area. If you’re having a hard time locating either company, either check out one of the airport directories or ask an employee nearby for assistance.

Once you have your keys you’ll be directed to your rental vehicle and will be able to start your Stephenville vacation in earnest.  To find your rental car, simply walk out of the front of the terminal, walk past the short-term parking lot and the rental car lot will be immediately seen.  The long-term lot is on the opposite side.

Stephenville Airport Directions to Stephenville…

Getting to the center of Stephenville, also known as Downtown Stephenville, is a simple five minute drive. Start by following Dakota Dr around until you can take a right onto Tennessee Dr. When Tennessee Dr dead-ends into Massachusetts Dr, take a right. After about half a kilometer Massachusetts Dr will intersect with Carolina Ave. Turn left onto Carolina Ave and follow it for about a kilometer until it turns into Main St and intersects with Provincial St. Once you’ve made it to the intersection, you’ve found the center of the city.

Stephenville Airport Car Rental Return...

All the major gas stations near the airport can be found along Main St. My advice for refueling on the way back to the airport is to take the same directions to downtown back to the airport. Just follow them backwards, starting on Main St, and refuel before you reach the intersection of Carolina Ave and Massachusetts Dr. Once you’re on Massachusetts Dr you’re pretty much going to be out of luck and stuck going back or hoping that a new gas station was built really close to the airport. If worst comes to worst, you can always use the Shell at the airport, but the exorbitant prices are pretty much going to be the same as what you’ll pay in fees when you return the car anyway.

Things To Do in Stephenville…

Stephenville is a lot like your typical big city town. It offers a great night life experience full of tons of bars and clubs, mostly because of the two colleges in the area that give it a bit of a college town feel. The town’s biggest attraction by far is the Stephenville Theater Festival, which has garnered the attention and respect of major publications like the New York Times. The festival performs in the second largest art center in the province, with four hundred and fifty seats in the main theater, one hundred and fifty in the secondary theater, and an art exhibition area for walking traffic to enjoy. The event continues to grow in size and scope, making the limited seating a precious commodity. Like your rental, you may want to reserve your spot as soon as you can.

Other Car Rental Options at Stephenville International Airport…

Your options for vehicles are pretty much covered and all are equipped to handle the area’s constant freezing temperatures and persistently snowy roadways. Rentals are limited and first come, first serve. You’ll want to make your reservation as quickly as possible, especially if you’re planning on visiting during the major event. You also may want to consider grabbing a GPS system if you’re going to explore the local countryside.
