St. John Airport Car Rental

Saint John Airport Background…

Saint John Airport had already started undergoing regularly scheduled operations a few months before it officially opened in 1952. Aside from that, not much is known about the airport’s past. It’s been in operation for just over fifty years now and has been steadily working diligently to assist the residents of Saint John ever since its doors first opened. The airport has a nice track record when it comes to accidents. The only one to ever occur happened in 1976, when an Atlantic Central Airlines plane reported it had sustained damage beyond repair while at the airport.

The airport is owned by Transport Canada and serves are part of the National Airports System. It is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency and classified as a port of entry. Even though it doesn’t have any regularly scheduled international flights, the airport is able to accommodate international planes with up to one hundred and twenty passengers. Today, the airport serves more than two hundred thousand people a year.

Saint John Airport Car Rentals…

Even though it only services about a quarter of a million passengers each year, four of the eight major international car rental agencies have set up shop on-site at the airport. Their counters are located within the terminal and fairly easy to spot if you just walk around the arrivals/baggage claim area a bit. If you don’t have time to find the counters yourself, consult a directory or nearby employee for assistance. The four companies you can choose from include Hertz, Avis, National and Budget. Once you’ve talked to your company’s representative and signed the required rental agreement you’ll be handed the keys to your vehicle and directed to its location in the rental lot just outside the terminal.

Saint john Airport Directions to Downtown Saint John…

The airport serves a bit of a regional role in the area. While Saint John is the biggest city around, there are about a dozen small towns populating the surrounding area. The airport sits well off north of the city with about five or six small towns in-between. To make your way to the city you’re going to have to leave via the unnamed stretch of road that serves as both the entrance and exit to the airport and turn left onto Loch Lomond Rd. Leaving the airport, you will notice when you exit the little green sign opposite the airport exit road directing you to the city center of Saint John.

Simply put, you’re going to follow that road all the way into the heart of the city.  There will be various bends, and slight mergings that will take place, but you will be well-served to stay on the main road.  When you get deep into the city of St. John, go past the Harbour Station ice hockey rink, go underneath a couple of overpasses and then turn left onto Smythe St and into the city center.

Saint John Airport Car Rental Return…

Despite the plethora of small towns, there aren’t many gas stations in the area. For any choices at all you’re going to want to make sure you take the same directions backwards to get back to the airport. IF you do, your first potential stop will be a Petro Canada gas station on Mt. Pleasant Ave E. This is still pretty far from the airport but will do fine as long as you don’t have a gas-guzzler for a car. About a third of the way down Loch Lomond Rd (835 Loch Lomond Rd) you’ll run into another Petrol Canada and finally an Irving before making your way back to the airport. Your very last choice is actually an Irving that sits just outside the airport to take advantage of anyone who didn’t have the foresight to refuel sooner. Rememeber, convenience comes at a cost.

Remember teh lot from which you originally picked up your rental.  It's right past the terminal - traveling back to the airport.  As soon as you drive past the front of the terminal, look to your right.  The lot will be easy to access.

Other Car Rental Options at Saint John Airport…

With four rental companies to choose from and a low number of passengers, you’ll most certainly find the vehicle you want. If you want something specific, reserve your car about forty-eight hours ahead of time and you’ll probably get any strange request you ask for. My only other tip is to get a GPS system from whichever company you rent from in order to ensure you don’t get lost amoung all the small towns during your vacation.

Other Rental Car Locations in Saint John…

The only other car rental location that we’re aware of is at 529 Rothesay Avenue.  This is a Budget Rental Car location positioned on the North side of the town, in a more industrialized area.  Use the booking engine above to determine which car rental location works best for you.
