Federico Fellini Airport or otherwise known as the Rimini Airport is conveniently located 5 km south of Rimini on the beautiful Adriatic east coast. It's located strategically close to the business centers and art in Emilia Romagna and the neighboring regions of Umbria, Marche and Tuscany. 
You can find most of the major car rental agencies including Sixt, TravelCar, Maggiore, Europcar, Hertz and Avis. Each car rental company has an agent in the arrivals area, near the baggage claim.
This is really quite a quaint area and it isn't too difficult to navigate your rental car out of the Airport and onto pleasant roadways that will meet easily relax you with the beauty of the area. After picking up your car, head out of the Airport northwest toward Via Flaminia. It's a simple two lane highway nestled in a residential area. Then you and take a right on Via Flaminia. Then turn left onto Via Flaminia/SS16. You're are going to continue in this direction for around 1.5 kilometers. This is a residential district on a city road. Turn right staying on Via Flaminia/SS16. Then, you're going to want to stay slightly left to continue on Via Flaminia/SS16 and you're going to go through another traffic circle. Stay on Via Flaminia/SS16 for 1.7 km and enjoy the country sights as you continue to go straight through three more traffic circles.
After about 1.7 kilometers you're going to reach Via Bernardino Gueritti. It's at a stoplight and there will be a large white arrow with the blue background right under the street name. It will just say Gueritti. There will also be another sign on the corner of the street with arrows all pointing the to the left also. You'll want to turn your rental car to the left on Gueritti. Then to remain on Gueritti, you'll need to veer off slightly to the right. Gueritti then becomes Via Circonvallazione Meridionale. Continue on and this street turns into Via Circonvallazione Occidentale.
Keep going until you approach another traffic circle in which you'll want to take the first exit on Via Luigi Poletti. Via Luigi Poletti turns into Piazza Cavour and you'll have reached the center of the city. To get back the way you came you need to take Piazza Cavour to Via Luigi Poletti. Take the 4rth exit at the traffic circle to Via Circonvallazione Occidentale which turns into Via Donato Bramante. Turn left to stay on Via Donato Bramante and then another left. You'll make a slight right to Via Circonvallazione Meridionale and then you can follow the previous directions back to the airport.
Don't forget to re-fuel your rental car before returning to the airport. There is a Agip fueling gas-station (or diesel) right across the airport on Via Flaminia. It will be on the left when returning your vehicle from Rimini. This would be a great place to re-fuel before returning the car. 
The Airport offers shops in all areas both Schengen and none Schengen. If you're hungry, there are some coffee shops and also a self Service Restaurant. Other basic amenities include a bank and ATM cash machines.
There are a number of the Airport Hotels to choose from including, they are all located within 1.5 miles of the Airport. The excellent benefits of this location is that they are all located right next to the beach and a short 10 minute drive from the Rimini Airport. Each can be reached fairly quickly and easily with your Federico Rental Car.
Hotel Miriam - Only a little over a half mile from the airport you get the best of both worlds with a very short walk to the beach. The Hotel Miriam has air conditioned rooms with LCD TV's and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are soundproof for a very quiet and pleasurable stay with convenient toiletries and a hairdryer in a private bathroom. There are also many rooms with an ocean view. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner and serves local as well as standard Italian cuisine. Room start at around 80 euros.
The Hotel Stresa - This hotel is also very close to the airport and the beach. They offer free Wi-Fi, parking and bikes. Eurhotel - Eurhotel is .8 miles from the airport and very close to the Miramare beach. It has free parking, swimming pool with a sun terrace and very close to Rimini's shopping and very popular nightlife. A buffet breakfast is served daily and the restaurant serves many Italian specialties that are both national as well as regional.
