Philadelphia Car Rental

Philadelphia Airport Basics.....

Located just south of the fifth largest city in the United States, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) serves the entire Delaware Valley region and in some cases is even a good choice when traveling to New York or Baltimore. In terms of air traffic, Philadelphia International is the world's 11th busiest airport, but is not even in the top 30 for passenger movement. This means that PHL is generally less stressful than more crowded airports. The facility currently utilizes six terminals.

In 2011, a $5.2 billion project to improve two runways, add a runway and add two passenger terminals began and is planned to take thirteen years to complete.

Philadelphia Airport Car Rental (Driving Directions to Philadelphia).....

There are seven car rental desks with locations at the airport.  These include Hertz, National, Enterprise, Dollar, Avis, Budget and Alamo.  Each of these car rental companies are situated at/near the baggage claim area.  And when picking up your car at the airport, you will exit to Zone 2, just outside the baggage claim area.

Getting out of the Philadelphia Airport, you will see blue overhead signs pointing you to Philadelphia via 76, 95 and 29.  Stay left.  Merge into I-95 North to Philadelphia.  Travel on I-95 for about 4 miles until you come to exit 17 on Highway 611 towards Broad Street and Patterson Avenue.  Take the right.  Continue on Broad Street all the way to the city.

When returning your rental vehicle, you will definitely want to re-fuel before returning the car back to the Philadelphia Airport.  There are a few gas stations on Broad Street before getting back on I-95.  As an example, there is a Citgo station on the right hand side of the road before you get to Schuylkill Expressway.

Airport Amenities.....

On of the most unique features of Philadelphia International Airport is the Exhibitions Program. The program brings the vibrant culture of Philadelphia to airport visitors through temporary art exhibits located throughout the airport. The Exhibits Program has displayed a wide variety of artwork, from landscape paintings to deep-space themed sculpture to ceramic and glass work. Philadelphia is certainly home to some amazingly unique artists.

One exceptionally interesting artist that has been featured in the Exhibits Program is Rick Stanley of Stanley Clock Works. Stanley and his son, Vince, design and create imaginative clocks out of everyday objects. They installed in the Philadelphia International Airport their "Beer Bottle Clock", a twenty-one foot long clock that uses recycled beer bottles as gear teeth. How many other airports offer guests such an amusing way to pass the time in-between flights? The Exhibits Program curators work hard to make PHL an incredible and memorable place to visit.

Besides car rental and stunning artwork, the airport also boasts over one-hundred great shops and eateries. The site's Street Pricing Policy ensures that the prices inside the airport are not artificially increased to take advantage of patrons stuck waiting for a plane. When shopping inside PHL, you are assured that the prices are comparable to what you'd find in the city of Philadelphia. Dining options include fine choices such as the Sky Asian Bistro and Vino Volo. There is great shopping to be had in stores like Brooks Brothers, Harley Davidson, and Bose.

Some of the terminals in PHL include advanced imaging full body scanners. The purpose of these scanners is to mitigate the presence of non-metallic security threats.

If you are planning on flying in or out of Philadelphia International, you may want to learn more about these devices so you can make an informed decision about how you want to be processed by the Transportation Security Administration.

When planning a trip to anywhere from Washington D.C. to New York City,  Philadelphia International Airport is definitely worth consideration.
