Ontario California Car Rental

Ontario International Airport Background…

No, we’re not talking about Ontario, Canada. This airport is located in Ontario, California. It was first built in on four hundred and seventy acres in 1942, and then almost immediately taken over by the U.S. Army in 1943 for the purposes of troop training during World War II. In 1946 the airport was handed back to the city and renamed from Ontario Municipal Airport to Ontario International Airport because of the regularly scheduled transpacific cargo flights.

Commercial flights didn’t start occurring until 1950. In 1967, the City of Ontario and the City of Los Angeles went into a joint-powers agreement that made the airport part of Los Angeles’ regional airport system. In 1985, Los Angeles bought the airport from Ontario and added it to their Los Angeles World Airports collection. In 2006, “LA/” was added to the title to convey this association, making the official name of the airport LA/Ontario International Airport. The airport services about five million passengers annually.

Ontario International Airport Car Rentals…

The airport offers ten separate car rental agencies to all of its passengers, eight of which are located on airport grounds while two others are not. The eight on-airport rental companies are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty.

The two off-airport companies are Advantage and Fox. Whether you’re looking to access an on-airport or off-airport rental company, you’re going to have to locate and access the free shuttles that take passengers from the terminals to the Consolidated Rental Car Facility. These shuttles are found just outside the Baggage Claim area and run regularly. If you’re having an issue finding the shuttles just ask the nearest airport employee for directions or find the designated area outside. The shuttle will take you to the corner of Haven Ave and Airport Dr. From the Consolidated Rental Car Facility you can get free transportation to one of the off-airport car rental locations.

Ontario California to Los Angeles…

Once you land you’re essentially in the middle of Ontario, California, although you’re probably really looking to visit Los Angeles or some other part of the metropolis area to the west of the airport. To get headed to a westward destination you just have to head away from the Consolidated Rental Car Facility via N Haven Ave and hop on I-10 West. It’s a long drive, but the interstate will take you all the way into the heart of Los Angeles.

Ontario California Car Rental Return…

Unless you rented from one of the above-mentioned off-site airport car rental companies, you’ll want to return your vehicle to the Consolidated Rental Car Facility – sitting on the Easternmost area of the airport facility.  You will be able to exit your vehicle via either the access point on E. Airport Drive or from the S Haven Ave, but you'll have to return the vehicle on the front access via Airport Dr.  See Picture below for return access.

But before you return the vehicle, you will want to fill up your car rental’s gas tank, which you’ll likely have to do after a long drive back.  To do so, either take the N Archibald Ave I-10 East exit or the N Haven Ave I-10 East exit. Take a left after exiting and you should find yourself in-front of one of two Mobil gas stations and a few locally owned alternatives. Of course, just about every I-10 exit has a gas station or two. Just remember, you have to come back with a full tank unless you get a different fuel policy, which would be ill-advisable.

Another gas station option sits at a 7-11 on South Haven Avenue.  As mentioned above, South Haven is the road that runs North/South, bordering the Consolidated Rental Car Facility to the East.  Travel South on South Haven until you cross Jurupa Street and the convenience store will be on the right-hand side.

Car Rental Options at Ontario International Airport…

You can get all of the usual car make and models that just about every other airport and car rental company around the U.S. offers. There are a few SUV and off-road options sure to be available, but you’ll probably want to just stick with an average sized coup or sedan. If you really want to make sure you get the car you want, then reserve your vehicle as far ahead of time as possible and beat out the other five million competitors before the game even begins.
