Northwest Florida Regional Airport Background…

The Okaloosa Regional Airport was first born in 1957. It opened along with a fully functioning terminal that started within the confines of Eglin Air Force Base and was operated by only three people. Southern Airways was the only airline to fly to and from the airport. By 1968 Southern Airways had four daily flights departing from the location and Air New Orleans started a second regularly scheduled flight service to New Orleans.

The airport got its own terminal building in 1975, enabling Southern Airways to up its number of daily departures from the airport to twelve. In its first year of business, with only one airline provider, the airport recorded nearly one hundred thousand enplaned passengers. A major expansion that created public parking and a brand new terminal was finished in 2004, culminating in the beginning of what is now the Northwest Florida Regional Airport. In 2008, the one-year construction plan for the Consolidated Rental Car Service Facility began and the name was officially changed to what it is today.

Northwest Florida Regional Airport Car Rentals…

Seven nationally acclaimed car rental companies offer their services to Northwest Florida Regional Airport passengers every day. The seven companies include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and Advantage. All seven counters are lined up within the baggage claim area of the terminal. If you’re having a hard time finding them-they look like a row of bank tellers-consult the nearest directory or ask a nearby employee for assistance. Once you’ve finished filling out all the necessary paperwork you’ll be directed to the Consolidate Rental Car Service Facility for pick-up and drop-off instructions.

The airport is considered to be a part of the Eglin Air Force Base and is essentially located out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town is a small establishment called Valparaiso. To reach it you’ll have to leave the airport the only way anyone can and turn right onto Eglin Parkway. Hug the right side of the road, keeping right when it forks onto Valparaiso Parkway, and you’ll essentially be in the heart of the small town.

Northwest Florida Airport Directions...

Being a regional airport, the point is to fly into a centralized location so that various passengers can reach a variety of destination. Think of it as an eclectic position with two methods of travel. The first is located north of the airport. When you exit the airport, take a left onto Eglin Parkway and hug right until you can turn onto Roger J Clary Highway. You’re going to follow it north for quite a ways, passing Duke Field, until it turns into S Ferdon Blvd and you reach the I-10 on-ramp. North under the overpass is Crestview, west is Milton, and east is Defunlak Springs. Of course, if you continue in any of those directions you’ll run into even more cities and what not, but I’ll leave that all up to you. Some of those areas include Crestview and Defuniak Springs.

The other direction you can travel is south (the majority of folks travel towards the South with destinations including Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and the Lake Lorraine area.  Start by turning left onto Eglin Parkway and continuing to follow the road as it twists and turns into Eglin Parkway NE and SE. When it finally ends and forks into Miracle Strip Parkway SW you’ll have your choice to follow the Gulf Coast east or west. Left takes you east further into Florida while right will take you west towards Florida’s border.

If you head back from the south you’ll pass through a bunch of small towns and a couple of gas stations. Make sure you refuel before hitting Eglin Parkway or Lewis Turner Blvd. If you don’t remember to do so then you’ll have to drive pass the airport and to Valparaiso, which is where anyone coming from any other direction besides south will have to refuel if they’re going to make it back to the airport with a full tank of gas.

All of the car rental companies you’ll encounter will offer a satellite GPS system of some kind. My advice? Take it. You’re going to be traveling far and into who knows what. The GPS system will allow you to be prepared no matter what and keep you from driving around lost.
