Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport Car Rental

Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport Background…

This XNA airport is one of the youngest in the United States. It was opened in 1998 in order to replace the traffic that was overflowing Drake Field, the eldest airport in Fayetteville. The airport saw bigger growth than anyone could have possibly anticipated, so a twenty-one million dollar upper-level concourse began construction in 2007. Three years later construction was complete, the state’s first moving walkway was in operation, and twelve more gates were added to the east side of the terminal.

The airport was opened in November and saw nearly sixty thousand passengers in its first two months. During its first year it saw more than six hundred and fifty thousand passengers and has been steadily increasing ever since. For more than eight years now, the airport has served more than one million passengers over the course of more than forty thousand aircraft operations each year. The airport is also going to be on the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.

Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport Car Rentals…

There are seven rental companies located on-site: Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise, National, and Thrifty. All seven companies can be found around the baggage claim area and will direct you to their car rental parking lot outside once you’ve signed for your vehicle. Actual vehicles are situated adjacent to the terminal.  Once you walk out of the front of the terminal, you will find the car rental park to your right.  Simply walk over, find your vehicle and hit the road.

XNA Airport Directions to Bentonville (and Wal-Mart Corporate Headquarters)…

Once you drive away from the terminal, you will soon be confronted with a smallish road that goes to the left – a small blue sign will be posted directing you onward.  Take the left (which is actually called Airport Service Road.  Drive for about 2.5 miles and you will need to turn right (again, there will be a Bentonville Directional sign posted at this turn).  After turning right there, you will drive STRAIGHT for about 4.2 miles – don’t turn, veer or merge left or right.  Continue straight until you get to Centerton Blvd at the stop sign.  Now turn right on Centerton and drive for another 4.5 miles right into Bentonville.  You will then turn left on SW I St at the stoplight.  You will then turn right at the Budget Car Rental location near the Wal-Mart Corporate office.  Watch for the big blue Wal-Mart signs and drive right to the building.

XNA to Lowell (JB Hunt) Directions…

For those traveling to Lowell, you will not make the turn above.  Instead, you will travel all the way out of the airport until it ‘T’s.  Take the left and travel on 264 until you get to the Cave Springs area (you will see a Phillips 66 gas station across the road which would make a great place to re-fuel before returning your rental car), then take the right.  You will soon take the left again on to 264 and drive for about 5 miles all the way over the bridge that goes over 540 and thru the next stoplight.   Right after the next stoplight, you will take the right onto S 6th Place which will deliver you right to the corporate headquarters.

XNA Airport Direction to Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville…

This one is a little tricky.  I would recommend that you travel like you’re traveling to JB Hunt as above, but instead of going over 540, join it near the Lowell area.  Drive South on it for about 11.5 miles and exit off of it on exit 66 for AR-112.  Drive South on AR-112 all the way to the campus.  Woo Pig Sooie!

Other Airport Amenities…

We live in the Information Age, where an internet connection is almost a requirement for everyday life to continue onward. Many airports either offer free Wi-Fi or require you to pay for their services. Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport offers both options. You can either use the free Wi-Fi provided by Complete Computer Solutions or pay for a brand name connection from AT&T for variable prices. It’ll cost you four dollars for two hours, eight dollars for a day, and twenty dollars for a month. My advice would be to just stick with the free Wi-Fi option, but if the free option isn’t good enough, or is messing up every two seconds, then you’ll be forced to go with the payment option, which is a very real possibility.

Other Car Rental Options at Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport…

Remember that XNA is really out in the middle of nowhere.  When the airport was built, it was assumed that the local towns would eventually creep towards it.  They might, but in the meantime, you will find that the airport is in the middle of some very old farmland – complete with cows, horses and even a few chickens.  Don’t expect a lot of amenities right near the facility, they’re just not there.

Refueling options will generally be best somewhere near the town from which you’re traveling – except as above in Cave Springs at the local Phillips 66.  There are more gas stations than we’re mentioning, of course.  But given the remote location of the airport, we certainly suggest that you fill up whenever you can.  We love this airport, but also understand that most folks are used to renting vehicles in areas where multiple hotels, restaurants and gas stations exist near facilities.  That’s just not the case with XNA.  It definitely has its own charm, however. I personally enjoy a leisurely drive thru the countryside and you will certainly get that here.

Your rental options at the airport include all your basic choices such as SUVs, four-door sedans, and off-road vehicles. Considering the fact that you may have to drive thirty minutes to reach each individual destination, you may want to make sure you get a car you’re comfortable with. The only way to do that, besides skipping in line, is to make a reservation online before the line even forms. Playing roulette otherwise could end up terribly.
