Murcia Airport Car Rental
The Murcia San Javier Airport sits right on the coast of the Mediterranean, and is about 50 km away from the town of Murcia via rental car. The airport serves many little tourist towns up the coast of Spain towards Torrevieja, and the town of Murcia as well. Between 1 and 1.5 million folks used the airport in 2011, and the trend is that fewer folks are using the airport in recent years. The most traffic that the airport has ever seen occurred in 2007 at a little over 2 million folks. 
There are several car rental companies at the Murcia San Javier Airport. These include Europcar, Centauro, Goldcar, and Avis. The car rental agent desks are located in the arrivals area of the airport, not far from the baggage claim carousels. They are each lined up on a wall, and are easily visible on your way out of the terminal. When you exit the terminal, turn to your right and walk down the sidewalk to the car rental park. You will see the signs clearly marked indicating where the rental cars are stored. The car rental park is less than 100 meters from the front of the terminal exit.
Driving out of the airport and to Murcia, you will go thru a vehicle barrier on your way out of the car rental park. Continue out until you approach a traffic circle. Go straight thru the circle and continue in the same direction that you were going and drive about 2 km and arrive at the second traffic circle. Take the second exit at this traffic circle (the first exit will take you to San Javier). You will climb the little hill and merge into AP-7, and drive for about 1.5 km. Then take exit 782 to your right, and travel in a circle and go underneath an overpass. Go thru the immediately following, concrete traffic circle and continue again in the same direction that you were going as you approached the circle. Do not take the first exit underneath the overpass, but instead continue on C-3319 at the traffic circle (It is important to slow down a little here, as signage is very poor.) Drive onward for about 26 km then take the ramp onto A-30 (blue signs will be posted overhead). Drive A-30 all the way into the city center.
When returning a vehicle from Murcia back to the Murcia San Javier Airport just reverse the directions above. Follow A-30 South until you take exit 158 back to the airport. Signs are marked very clearly back towards the airport.
When you book you vehicle (actually before you book your vehicle) you should determine the fuel policy for the rental car. Many - if not most - Spanish car rental companies operate on a 'full-empty' fuel policy. This simply means that you will pickup your rental car at the Murcia Airport with a full tank and you should return it back to the airport with an empty tank. If that's your policy, it will do you no good to re-fuel close to the airport. However, if your fuel policy is 'full-full' then you will want to re-fuel near the airport. A "can't miss" restaurant near the Murcia Airport is the Restaurante Bacchus. To get there, travel out of the airport as above, and take the 4th exit at the first traffic circle onto F-34 towards Los Narejos. After about 1.8 km from the traffic circle, you will turn right at the next traffic circle and drive down Av Justo Maqueda (there will be a row of palm trees lining the middle of the road). Travel about 800 meters, and turn right on the last road before the traffic circle. There will be a large white sign right before the right turn. After turning right, the Restaurante Bacchus will be about 100 meters down the road. The restaurant specializes in authentic Spanish food, serving all types of meats, fishes, shrimp dishes and soups. You will not be disappointed.
