Medicine Hat Airport Car Rental

Medicine Hat Regional Airport Background…

Medicine Hat Airport was officially opened in 1912 and stood as little more than a dirt airstrip for a number of years as it served the well-to-do private citizens and provided airmail services to the region. In 1941 the Department of National Defense took the airport from the City of Medicine Hat through the use of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan that called for as many airports as possible to be built and/or turned into military training bases for World War II pilots. The airport served as one such training base until it was handed back over to the city in 1947 and continued commercial use.

The terminal building that exists today was built in 1980 during the middle of a string of expansions that started back in the 1960s and continue today. Even though the airport isn’t one of the busiest in Canada, it is quite important to the economic development of the area. It is currently undergoing a three part Master Plan that was started in 2006.

Medicine Hat Regional Airport Car Rentals…

Avis is currently the only car rental company offering its services to the passengers of Medicine Hat Regional Airport. It is located on-site in the main terminal’s Arrivals area and uses one of the closest lots to the terminal as a convenient location to store its rental fleet. The Master Plan leaves a lot of room for expansions opportunities and could cause the airport to easily garner the attention and service capabilities of other rental companies in the coming years. I’d suggest calling ahead and checking if any new companies have moved in before you finalize any reservation plans with Avis, unless it is your usual go-to company.

Medicine Hat Airport Directions to City…

The City of Medicine Hat is the largest in its immediate region, which only includes one other small town called Radcliff located to the northwest of the city. The next major city is more than two hours away, leaving you little option than to find everything you require in Medicine Hat during your stay. To get to the heart of the city from the airport you simply have to exit the airport the only way possible and turn right onto Gershaw Dr. The road’s name will change a couple of times.

Places to Eat in Medicine Hat…

Even though the Zucchini Blossom isn’t near the airport, it isn’t far from the city center.  You can access it by crossing the river to 62 3rd Street NE.  The building is a little copper colored building on the right hand side (traveling from the center of town).  You will be served great salads, sandwiches and desserts.  By all accounts this is a GREAT place to pick up a good lunch at a great price.

Medicine Hat Airport Car Rental Return…

Medicine Hat has some of the most conveniently placed gas stations in Canada, with two to choose from just outside the airport. If Gas Plus (drive past the airport turn-in from the city for a block or two) or Shell isn’t your cup of tea, turn right or left onto the Trans-Canada Highway and you’ll find plenty of gas station options to choose from. Refuel, get back onto AB-41A and you shouldn’t have a problem getting back to the airport with a full tank of gas regardless of the type of vehicle you rent.

After filling up the rental, simply travel back to the airport and park the vehicle in the place from where you picked it up.  Return the keys to the agent and you’re good to go.

Other Airport Amenities…

Although the airport isn’t one of the most modern around, it does offer a lot of the usual amenities frequent flyers are used to seeing. Free Wi-Fi can be accessed throughout the terminal, there are pay phone stations and ATMs located in key locations to make them as convenient as possible, and the airport even has its own café. Baggage carts are free to use and if you don’t like the café’s food there are vending machines scattered through the terminal as well.

Other Car Rental Options at Medicine Hat Regional Airport…

With only one car rental company pulling the brunt of the work, your options are fairly limited. Avis does a good job providing as much variety as possible but it can hardly compete with airports that have multiple rental car companies. If you want something specific your best bet is to call as far ahead as possible and hope that Avis either has what you’re looking for or can get it before you arrive. If you try to wait until the last minute you’re probably going to end up stuck in a vehicle you really don’t want. Also, while Medicine City is easy to navigate, you should think about grabbing a GPS system from Avis to avoid getting lost and major standstills in heavy traffic.
