Medford Airport Car Rental

Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport Background…

The City of Medford purchased Newell Barber Field in 1922 and renamed it Medford Field, marking the beginning of city-owned commercial air services in the area. Over the course of six years the field saw numerous additions and changed hands a couple of times. The Medford Chamber of Commerce decided it needed a terminal airport that could bring the city and its people into the new commercial aviation age. They settled for a nearly three hundred acre plot of land about three miles from the center of town for twenty-eight thousand dollars.

The landing strip at the new site was state-of-the-art, costing the equivalent of more than one and a half million dollars today. Although the strip was ready by 1929, the airport didn’t open until 1930. It was called Medford Municipal Airport. The only incident to occur since its creation so long ago was the tragic death of a coyote by a landing aircraft. In 1995 the airport was renamed what it is today after receiving its “International” title and has happily served more than half a million passengers each year since.

Medford Airport Car Rentals…

Unlike most international airports around the United States, Medford is only serviced by six of the eight major national car rental agencies.  All six counters are located within the terminal near the baggage claim area. Upon arrival - and beforehand - you can choose from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National. If you’re having a hard time locating a particular car rental company, take a gander at one of the directories nearby or ask an airport employee for assistance.

Vehicles are situated to the South (Left) of the terminal.  Simply walk out of the front of the primary exit door at the terminal and turn to your left.  Rental vehicles are stored in their very own rental car parking lot.  Simply walk over to the parking area, find your vehicle and you’re ready to go.  If you have trouble locating your vehicle, there are little signs in a couple of areas in the car rental parking lot.  They are color-coded to give you an idea of where in the lot your rental car company parks its vehicles.  It can be very helpful.  Don’t forget to check your car over once you receive your keys and are directed to its position in one of the rental lots nearby.

Medford Airport Car Rentals to Medford Directions…

Pulling out of the rental car parking lot, you will turn right – just in front of the Fedex Building.   Within a few feet you will turn left on Terminal Spur Rd, instead of traveling back to the front of the terminal.    Drive for a few more feet and then turn right onto Lawnsdale Road at the stopsign.  Then take a left on Biddle and drive all the way into the downtown area.

Medford Airport Car Rental Return…

Taking your rental back to the Medford facility is as easy as reversing the above directions.  When you get back to the airport you will follow the signs and take the vehicle back to the location from which you picked it up originally.

One way back from anywhere in and around Medford is to take I-5 to Cedar Lake Highway, turning east from the off-ramp and then quickly turning left onto Biddle Rd. If you take this route, you’ll see a Chevron to your right before you turn left onto Biddle Rd. It is your last chance to refuel before you pass the airport. If you’re coming from north of the city though, then taking the I-5 E Pine St exit is your easiest path back. You’ll have a Shell, Chevron, and Circle K to choose from before you head east on E Pine St and it turns into Biddle Rd.

Other Car Rental Options at Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport…

Even though only six out of the eight national chains are available, you’ll be able to find any type of vehicle you could ask for in the rental car fleet stationed at the airport. The only issue is that the vehicles are all spread amongst the companies. One company may have the car you want while the other doesn’t and will know it can charge you more to rent that particular vehicle than others. Try not to show any specific preference and make a reservation as far ahead of time as you can to ensure you get the best deal possible. Also, all six of the rental agencies located at the airport will be able to offer you a GPS system along with your rental. I suggest you take it.
