Malaga Airport Car Rental

Malaga Airport Basics.....

The Malaga Airport in the Costa Del Sol area ranks behind three other airports in Spain, in terms of traffic.  These busier three airport include the Barajas Airport, Barcelona Airport and the Palma de Mallorca Airport.  Having begun operations in 1919, this airport is one of the oldest in Europe.

Malaga Airport Car Rental.....

Several car rental companies are situated on the Malaga Airport premises.  These include AurigaCrown, Autos Lido, Avis, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, National, Record and Sixt.  Eurocar Rentals works with each of these (and more including Marbesol and Centauro) to secure you the best deal on your Malaga Airport Rental Car.

Location of Car Rental Agents...

The rental car agents aren't difficult to find.  Car rental agent areas will be found in both terminals (2 and 3), and both will be found in the arrivals area of the airport.  In each terminal the rental car agents will be bunched together, so you don't have to walk all around the arrivals area to locate your car rental agent.

Generally there will be long queues at the Malaga Airport - at least if you're renting thru one of the car rental companies that have desks at the airport.  It's possible to obtain a meet and greet company instead of waiting at the airport.  The downside to the meet and greet is that you may spend quite a bit of time in the transfer process - going to the off-site location.  Either way, make sure to pre-book your rental car before arriving.  It's not only cheaper, it will save time as well.

Location of the Rental Cars...

After speaking with a rental agent and getting your keys, you will find that the rentals are parked directly outside of the T2.  It couldn't be easier.  Once you locate your rental, we typically recommend that you take a couple of pictures (paying particular attention to any scratches or dings) and maybe even a video if you have time.  It might help to save on some confusion when you return the rental.

Directions out of the Airport...

From the Malaga Airport to Malaga - Coming out of the Av del Comandante García Morato from the airport you should notice little white signs directing you to Malaga via the MA-21.  Take the ramp onto Av de Velázquez/MA-21, and travel about 2.5 km until you come to the E-15 A-7 exit towards Algeciras or Cadiz.  Drive for another 2 to 2.5 km, stay in the right hand land and exit towards Cartama or Centro Urbano (Malaga city center) on A-357.  Make sure that you're watching for overhead signs directing you to Centro Urbano, or the city center of Malaga.  Continue on all the way to Malaga.

From the Malaga Airport to Marbella - When exiting the airport, stay right on the Av del Comandante García Morato to hop on the MA-21.  Drive about 2.5 km on MA-21 then merge onto the E-15 A-7 exit headed to Algeciras.  Drive about 15 km until you come to another overhead blue sign.  Continue onto E-15/AP-7 (signs for Marbella/Algecira) - don't take the 214 exit here.  Drive on the E-15 AP-7 toll road for about 28 km into the Marbella area.  (see picture below)

Hotels Near the Malaga Airport.....

Campanile Malaga - This is the preferred airport, at least by us.  The airport sits about 3 - 4 km's from the airport, and is about a 8 to 10 minute drive.  After hopping on the MA-21 towards Malaga, take exit 4 onto the MA-22.  Come to the first traffic circle and take the last exit off of it as if you're traveling to Guadalhorce (watch for gray signs around the traffic circle).  You will cross over the MA-21, cross thru a traffic circle, turn right, and come up on the backside of the hotel.  Even if you don't take a rental car from the Malaga Airport, a taxi will run you about 15 Euro to the hotel.  It should be noted that there is free parking for rental cars, it should be noted.

The hotel boasts a very comfortable and clean environment with an optional breakfast for an additional charge.  Free Wi-Fi is available at the hotel.  For the money (figure less than 60 Euro for a basic room) you won't find a better value this close to the airport.

Car Rental Return...

For cars that were picked up at the airport, you will need to return those to the P1 parking area.  Remember, this is not the same location from where you picked up the car originally.  Just make sure that before you return the car that the rental car tank is full of fuel (but only if the fuel policy on the rental is full/full - if it isn't, don't fill up the rental - see here for more information about Spain Rental Car Fuel policies).

For cars that were picked up offsite, remember to get an address for returning the rental car.  You may think that you remember exactly where you returned it, but sometimes (especially in new places) people don't remember things exactly like they thought.  Get an address, a phone number and even a postcode if possible.  These things may come in handy.

Malaga Airport Amenities.....

The Malaga Airport has the usual shops and restaurants and coffee spots and information desks.  Really nothing new here.  The airport is generally crowded and the queues are long, so be ready to wait your turn, wherever you go at the Airport.  Prices for food, drinks and water are high, and getting higher it seems, so bring a little extra cash for the trip.

Malaga Airport Car Rental Vehicles.....

Most all types of rental cars are available at the Malaga Airport.  This would include the basic economy cars that seem to rent at a higher rate, but also the luxury type vehicles that are in less demand.  SUV's and 7 or 8-passenger minivans also are a part of the car rental inventory.  Diesels and gasoline engines are available, although diesels are preferred in Spain.  This is simply because they generally get better fuel mileage.  Manuals are preferred over automatics, when it comes to transmission types.  Manuals also help to deliver a little better fuel mileage and are a little more responsive, especially around the corners and up the hills of Malaga.

Finally, we want to thank you for visiting our site.  We really appreciate your visiting us and hope that you learned a little something about renting a car at the Malaga Airport.  Again, if you have any questions regarding a booking that you made with us, or are interested in making a car rental booking in Malaga (or anywhere else for that matter) please use the contact page and let us know.
