Lulea Airport Car Rental

Lulea Airport Background…

Lulea Airport started back in 1941 as a military airfield but was soon opened for civilian use in 1944. Over the decades since, it has served the area well and grown quite a bit through numerous expansion and renovation projects that have kept the airport modernized. The constant growth the airport saw over its time has led it to its current position as the sixth busiest airport in Sweden.

In fact, the airport serves as the busiest in northern Sweden with more than one million passengers being served each year. Nearly three-quarters of a hundred thousand passengers that land on the single eleven thousand foot runway each year are international travelers, making the airport one of the primary hubs for international travel to the country. Speaking of the runway, it was extended in 2000 to its current length and now sits as the longest in Sweden. The airport still serves as both a military facility and civilian airport and is expanding on both fronts regularly as traffic to and from the airport continues to grow.

Lulea Airport Car Rentals…

Being one of the busiest airports in Sweden, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the airport is served by the usual three rental companies that can be found in airports all over the country. However, in addition to Avis, Hertz, and Europcar, the airport also offers the on-site services of Mabi. All of the rental counters can be located just across from the arrivals area.

You shouldn’t have a hard time locating the company you want, but there are directories scattered throughout the terminal and airport employee all about who are happy to answer any questions you may have. After signing the paperwork, you will be directed outside of the terminal, where your vehicle will be parked.  Upon exiting the airport, turn to your right and notice the car rental lot situated by itself, nestled in the pine trees that surround the facility.  You’ll be required to sign the usual rental agreements and what not before being handed the keys to your vehicle and sent to its marked location in the rental lot just outside.

Lulea Airport Directions to Lulea…

The Municipality of Lulea has benefited greatly from the airport’s success and vice-versa. It is one of the larger cities in northern Sweden and continues to flourish. To get there from the airport you’ll have to exit via Flygstationsvagen and turn left onto Luliksvagen when the road permits you to do so. After traveling about three kilometers you’ll reach the end of the road and need to turn right onto Kallaxvagen. Follow it for one kilometer and you’ll enter the roundabout the road ends into. Take the first exit you come across onto Alvbrovagen and you’ll be able to take the bridge across into the central portion of Lulea. The road name will change twice, but continue straight until you reach the corner of Sodra Hamnleden and Smedjegatan. Once your turn left at the corner onto Smedjegatan you’ll find yourself in the heart of the city with everything you need within a close drive’s reach and a central location with which to begin your vacation.

Lulea Airport Car Rental Return…

On your way back you’ll need to refuel in order to meet your fuel policy requirement, but there aren’t any gas stations located around the airport. Your best option is to refuel at either the Statoil or the OKQ8 located around the central portion of the city before taking the bridge back across the water and following the aforementioned directions backwards to the airport. Your only other option besides using one of those two is to get a hold of a GPS system or ask locals for refuel station suggestions. You may be able to find a local station closer to the airport that will prove to be more convenient.

Other Car Rental Options at Lulea Airport…

You’ll have plenty of rental vehicles to choose from with four rental companies competing for your business. If you want something really specific that none of the companies offer outright, ask if any of the companies would be able to send the vehicle to the airport form one of their nearby locations in Lulea. As long as the vehicle is not too obscure you should have no problem getting a company to do so. However, you’ll have to make your reservations well ahead of time if you expect such a request to be carried out. Also, you should certainly look into grabbing a GPS system from whichever company you choose to rent with.
