Lubbock Airport Car Rental

Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport Background…

The airport was first opened in 1937 under the name South Plains Airport. The United States Army Air Corps requisitioned the field in 1942 for use as a training facility during World War II. It was renamed South Plains Army Airfield and received numerous improvements as it was morphed into a military airfield. In 1947 the airfield was given back to the City of Lubbock and renamed Lubbock Municipal Airport. It received its “International” title when it was declared a Port of Entry and started providing regular international flights.

The passenger terminal used today was built in 1976 and expanded to what it is today in 1986. In 2004 the airport was renamed what it is today after former Texas governor Preston E. Smith. It is the eighth busiest airport in Texas, coming in just behind the seven major city airports, and is one of only forty-two airports in the world with a CNN Airport Network.

Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport Car Rentals…

The airport offers six car rental companies to choose from on-site. All of them are located within the baggage claim area and can be found with relative ease. If you find yourself having difficulty finding the rental company you want, simply take a look at one of the directories scattered around the airport or ask an employee nearby for assistance. The six agencies you have to choose from are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, and National. You’ll be directed to your vehicle, which will be located in a parking area nearby, once you’ve filled out all the rental agreement paperwork.

Lubbock Airport to Lubbock Downtown Directions…

Lubbock is considered one of the smaller cities in Texas, but it really isn’t as small as many people may make it sound. The airport is located just outside of the city, but makes getting to it extremely easy. All you have to do is hop on I-27 South from one of the airport’s exits and follow the interstate until you reach the Avenue E exit. Take a right off of Avenue E onto 19th St, and you’ll be in downtown Lubbock.

Lubbock Airport Car Rental Return…

Since travel to and from the airport is just a straight shot up the interstate, your refuel options are a little spaced out. Your best bet is to refuel while you’re still in Lubbock, preferably at a gas station near I-27, and then just hop on I-27 North and head back. If you refuel in the northern part of the city, and refuel to the brim, then you should make it back on “F” with little to no issues. Otherwise, you’re stuck taking whatever exits you find and probably using one of the locally owned gas stations out in the middle of nowhere. You may even have to drive past the airport to the Drew St exit and try finding a gas station around there.

The CNN Airport Network…

The CNN Airport Network is a television network that broadcasts general news, the weather, and features only to forty-two airports around the world. It broadcasts twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and can be watched for free from one of the televisions located throughout the terminal. It even broadcasts live NFL, National Football League, and NBA, National Basketball Association, games. The station filters out any and all graphic footage that could be deemed vulgar and/or inappropriate. It also refuses to accept any advertising money from any airlines in an effort to stay neutral to its viewership and not favor one airline over another. It has been around in the airport since 1992.

Other Car Rental Options at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport…

Your options pretty much include the usual; SUVs, four-door sedans, two-door coups, and pretty much anything else within reason. If you are looking for something special, then you’ll want to check out what each company has to offer beforehand and make a reservation, otherwise you’re probably not going to get what you want unless you find a four-leaf clover in the parking lot and hang a horseshoe around your neck. Reserving a vehicle is not only the best way to ensure you get what you want, but also the best way to get the cheapest price possible.
