London Gatwick Airport Car Rental

Gatwick Airport Basics.....

Gatwick Airport is the UK's second largest airport after Heathrow and the ninth busiest in Europe with over 100 gates for domestic and international departures and arrivals spread between the North and South Terminals.
The land which became Gatwick airport was first used as an aerodrome in 1920, and was licensed for commercial travel in 1933 but it wasn't until a major refurbishment in the 1950s that it became a centre for air travel in the South of England. Gatwick also claims to have the world's busiest single use runway which handles an average of 52 arrivals and departures per hour and over 30 million passengers pass through each year.

Car Rental At Gatwick Airport.....

The usual rental suspects are available at the Gatwick Airport.  These include Europcar, Alamo, Dollar and National, just to name a few.  Finishing in 2011, the Gatwick brass finished a multi-story car park, also known as "Car Park 6".

One important thing to remember when renting a car in London, regardless of airport, is the congestion charge.  Yes, congestion charge.  If your car is initiated within the congestion zone, or you travel into the congestion zone during the hours of 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening on weekdays, you will be charged a fee.  The fee is:

£10 if paid before, or during the day of travel.
£12 if paid by 12:00 am Midnight the day after travel.

If fees are unpaid, you may face a hefty fine, of up to £120, payable within 28 days.  Below is a map of the congestion area.  We always recommend asking questions of the car rental company assigned to you via the booking process regarding any further information.  This is an important initiative that you do not want to overlook.

 Gatwick Airport Amenities.....

Gatwick offers all the amenities you would expect from a modern international airport. Costa Coffee and Cafe Nero provide a quick caffeine fix for those early morning getaways, or more nervous flyers can settle their nerves with a drink in one of the 4 pubs. If you're hungry, Marks & Spencer and Eat provide sandwiches to go or there's a McDonald's if you're craving a burger. Frankie & Bennies and Giraffe provide a different option and you can even have caviar and smoked salmon at Caviar House & Prunier.  Garfunkel's Restaurant serves up a mean-looking Canadian Bacon and Pineapple Pizza (below).

Shopaholics are also well catered for with famous names such as Harrods, Hamleys, Lacoste and Hugo Boss as well as high street names such as HMV and Dixons. You can get last minute holiday essentials such as sun cream from Boots and pick up a book, newspaper or magazine from WH Smiths. Once you are 'airside', the Duty Free shops provide a wide range of perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol and tobacco at unbeatable prices.

Gatwick airport also boasts a number of bookable airport lounges (see picture below) providing a more luxurious place to await your departure. Complimentary food and drinks are provided and for younger travelers, the airport lounges feature video games, soft play areas and even a mini cinema. For Business travelers, meeting rooms can be booked and fax and photocopying services are available.
