The London City Airport is a smaller airport that generally transports passengers out of London's financial district. The airport sits due east of London - a car rental driving distance of about 14 km from the London city centre. The airport serves almost 3 million passengers per year, quite a bit smaller than any of the other London Airports including Heathrow, Glasgow, Stansted and Luton.
London City Airport Car Rental.....
There are five rental car companies that operate directly on the London Airport facility. These include Europcar, Alamo, Avis, Hertz and National. Each has been there for years, and each would provide you with quality service throughout the London area. Each company has a agent desk situated near the terminal building. After you have collected your bags, you will find the rental car parks located right in front the appropriately named, "Car Rental Building".
From the London City Airport, there really isn't a straightforward way to get to the city centre of London. But if that is your ultimate destination, simply travel out of the airport area until you "T" into Connaught Road and turn right. You will see a sign right at this "T" that points you to A13 The City. Follow the directions and turn right. Very soon, you will go left around a roundabout, then another very soon as well. Go down a little incline, and you will take the 3rd exit around another roundabout underneath an train overpass - putting you on N. Woolwhich Road and next to the train tracks. Travel on this road (following sign directions when possible) for about 3 km until you come to another roundabout just after the Canning Town Bus Stop on the left. At this roundabout, take the first left onto A13. Drive for about 5.7 km until the end of A13 - you will turn left on WhiteChapel High Street. Then turn right immediately onto Commercial Street and follow for about 1.8 km until you approach another roundabout. Take the second exit there and follow another 2 km. and follow signs into the heart of London.
When returning your rental car from London to the London City Airport, you will want to re-fuel before taking the vehicle back to the airport. To do so, we recommend that you pull over at a Texaco Station, less than 2 km. The fueling service station is on the left-hand side of the road as you travel back. After getting your petrol, you hop right back on the road to return the car.
Hotels Near the London City Airport.....
Premier Inn London Docklands - To get to this one, you will take the third exit at the 2nd traffic circle (Past the Travelodge on the left) and travel about .5 km until you see the turnoff for the Premier Inn on the left. The Premier Inn - by most accounts - is a pretty nice place to stay for a day or two. Parking is fairly expensive during the day (you might want to consider the high price when comparing other hotels in the area), but the service is good. Breakfast is good and hot too.
Travelodge London City Airport Hotel - If you're looking for something a little cheaper than the Premier, and a stone's throw closer, then you might want to consider the Travelodge. See the directions above to get to it in your rental car. The Travelodge (offering a cheaper parking offering than the Premier above) is a very, very basic hotel and we would probably recommend that you exhaust the option of the Premier above.
Car Rental Types at the London City Airport.....
For whatever reason, the London City Airport car rental is more expensive than either Heathrow or Stansted, but cheaper than Glasgow. Obviously, there are many factors that play into the pricing of rental cars, so just do your due diligence when trying to determine which airport, and which rental car to choose. Economy cars, standard vehicles, SUV's, minivans (both 7-passenger and 9-passenger) are offered for hire at the London City Airport. The car rental center is open from 7:00 in the morning to 9:30 at night, Monday thru Friday. For weekends, they're not open quite as long - so check with your car rental company about returning your vehicle. Also, there are the usual drop-boxes available for after-hours rental car return. But be careful here. We ALWAYS recommend that you return during hours if at all possible. This eliminates a lot of problems in terms of exactly the condition of the rental car upon return.
