Lisbon Airport Car Rental and Driving Guide.....
Sightseeing by car has many advantages over other forms of transportation on your vacation. For convenience car rental agencies such as Europcar, Avis, Hert and Budget are available at the airport. These companies have desks situated near the arrivals public area, so finding the car rental agents after picking up your baggage shouldn't be difficult at all. The car rental park where the rentals are actually housed, sits to the south of the terminal, and within walking distance of the terminal itself.
For tourists visiting the city of Lisbon, a rental car may not be the best way to go. The public transport system is pretty good and you can get in and around the city of Lisbon better with it than you can a car (unless you really are an adventurous driver and like to drive in congested cities without being able to park). But for folks on business in Lisbon, using the public transportation system may not be a good idea. Either way we have included the directions to the city center of Lisbon below. As an aside, we are calling the Lisbon city center the area right on the coast to the South.
The city of Lisbon in around 10 km from the airport with a 20-30 minute drive by car. Pick up the car and head out on Alameda das Comunidades Portuguesas leaving the airport. You're going to drive under a highway over pass and right after that you will enter the Praça do Aeroporto, you want to go around the turn circle and take the fourth exit onto the Av. Mal. Gomes da Costa ramp to Chelas. You are going to be going completely around until your almost where you started going under the highway overpass two times. Then you will be getting on the highway. Make a right to get on the ramp to Av. Mal. Gomes da Costa.
Approaching a turning circle, take the first exit at Av. do Santo Condestável. There will be a number of tall buildings that look like hotels. Stay on Av. Santo Condestável and you'll go through two turning circles. Follow this road for 1.2 km. Stay right and keep on Av. do Santo Condestável. Av. do Santo Condestável turns into Estr. de Chelas. You'll be driving through an older part of town for a kilometer. Estr. de Chelas turns into R. Gualdim Pais which turns into R. Bispo de Cochim.
Make a right on Av. Infante Dom Henrique. You'll be getting close to the port as you will see cargo cranes used to unload and load ships straight ahead. Take this road for 3 km. As you drive along you will be right on the coast and will see beaches. At this point you are pretty much in the city center of Lisbon.
For folks traveling to other areas near the airport, renting a vehicle is generally the best way to go. Below we have compiled some areas that you may want to visit in your rental car.

Cascais - Travel on E1 going west and then IC19 (E1 actually turns into IC19) for a combined distance of about 7 km. Take exit 1 and merge into IC17 traveling South and travel on IC17 for about 3 km.
