Krakow Airport Car Rental

Krakow Airport Basics.....

The Krakow Airport (KRK) or officially called the John Paul II International Airport, is near Krakow located in the southern part of Poland. The airport was strictly for the military up until the late 60's. It was then named after Pope John Paul II. It has been continually upgraded over the years with the last renovation being in 2002. It's the second busiest venue with Warsaw airport being the first.

Rental Cars and Driving Guide

Be sure to have a great stay by renting a car. The rental agencies at the airport include Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Europcar, National, Alamo and Sixt.  Each car rental company has a desk situated on the ground level in the arrivals hall not far from the exits.

A new multi-story car park at the Krakow Airport was finished in 2010, and car rental companies currently store vehicles on the 5th floor.  Ask you car rental customer service representative for details upon arrival.  Remember where you left from when returning the car to the Krakow Airport.  Some people complain that there aren't clear instructions on exactly where to place the car upon returning it.  In fact serveral car rental patrons at the Krakow report of having to leave their rental car with a different car rental company that they initially rented from.  So, it would be wise to ask exactly where to return the vehicle before leaving the facility.

To get to Krakow you will find that the city is 17 km from the airport and approximately 30-40 minutes away by car.

Head out of the airport on kapitana Mieczyslawa Medweckiego toward Na Lotnisko to get on Route 774.  Follow 774 for 2.3 km.  Route 774 will end and you'll be on Kryspinow.  You'll want to turn left onto Route 780.  Follow this road for 8.2 km.  You're going to then merge onto Ksiecia Józefa.  Instead of crossing over the river, you'll be driving parallel to it on the left side.  You'll be passing many houses on the way.  Route 780 turns into Tadeusza Kosciuszki.  You'll see a big church on the left side of the road.  Follow this road for 1.1 km.

You'll be making a right on Aleja Zygmunta Krasinskiego.  There will be a big Novetel building to the left as you turn.  The name is displayed on the building.  At this point you will be crossing the river and Aleja Zygmunta Krasinskiego turns into Marii Konopnickiej.  You will make a right off onto Rondo Grunwaldzkie and shortly will enter a really big turning circle.  Take the second exit to get on most Grunwaldzki.  Grunwaldzki turns into Józefa Dietla, which you will follow this for 1.3 km.

Finally, make a left onto Wielopole and you'll see the city buildings in the distance.  At this point you are in the city of Krakow and have access to all the sights and points of interest.

Amenities at the Krakow Airport.....

You'll find food to eat and a decent variety of different items to purchase from the various shops located conveniently in the airport. Shops and dining include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • Keraniss
  • Krakowski Kredens
  • Euro Shop liqueur store
  • Panorama Café Bistro Restaurant
  • Sweet stall
  • Tomatillo Bistro Bar

WLAN is available at the airport. There's limited free access of 6 minutes and you are charged per minute thereafter.

Honestly, most folks traveling thru the Krakow airport for the first time end up feeling disappointed.  Not necessarily because of the amenities at the facility, but because of the smallness of the airport.  Long queuing and surly employees make the airport feel even smaller than it actually is - and it is pretty small especially relative to the traffic that goes thru it.  In fact, many folks are avoiding the Krakow altogether and instead fly into Warsaw.  Do your research and see what you come up with.
