Kirkenes Airport Car Rental
Kirkenes Airport (KKN) is based just east of Kirkene and services up to 300,000 persons a year. The city of Kirkenes has a population of approximately 7,300 including all the surrounding areas. Most of the population have a Norwegian background with a small percentage being Sami. Some are also recent Russian Immigrants. The petroleum industry has become dominant in the region of Kirkenes.
There's a military base just outside of Kirkenes named the Høybuktmoen. All the border stations along the border are there to control illegal immigration and other potential illegal activities. At the center of town you can find a huge underground bunker named the Andersgrotta. It was a World War II shelter for 9000 town residents. You also have access to all the many recreational activities such as boat trips, snow scooter safaris, fishing and hiking tours, dog sledding trips and even stay the snow hotel in Kirkenes. 
The car rental companies at the Kirkenes Airport include Budget, Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Kirkenes Car Rental. Any of these companies will be great choices for you tour outside of the Kirkenes Airport.
Kirkenes is 13 km from the airport or approximately a 20-25 minute drive. It's a straight shot and very easy to get there. After you exit the airport you want to get on Gamisonsbakken going toward E6. Make a left on E6 and you're going to drive for 6.7km. You'll be passing through a traffic circle along the way. You're going to come to come to the E105 turn off. Keep on E6 for another 4.8 km.
You'll arrive into the town and then make a right on Kielland Torkildsens gate. Follow it along and you'll pass a lot of houses and will notice white apartment buildings to the right as you're driving. You'll enter the town square where there will be plenty of parking.
Driving back to the airport, you will just reverse the directions above. Make sure to re-fuel before leaving the town of Kirkenes, as we know of no service stations close to the airport. There is a 1-2-3 Service Station at the corner of Kielland Torkildsens Gate and Solheimsveien. Also, there is a Shell Service Fueling station near Wiulls Gate Road. Near the Shell Station is a Surf and Turf Restaurant, that many of the locals enjoy. 
Thon Hotel Kirkenes - The Kirkenes is located close to the Hurtigruten ferry terminal. Each room has a mini bar, TV, shower and a private bathroom. Also free Wi-Fi is available in each room with the majority of rooms providing great fjord views. There is a restaurant for fine dining and serves Norwegian dishes. You are also just a quick walk away from the World War II Bomb shelter.
Rica Arctic Hotel - The Rica offers rooms with hardwood floors, TV and Wi-Fi. The property also has an indoor swimming pool, sauna, sun room and public access to computers for their guests. It's 7.5 km from the airport, a mile from the Hurtigruten ferry terminal and provides free parking.
Sollia Gjestegaard - This is a very cozy guest house that is on Neitijärvi Lake. Rooms have private bathrooms and hardwood floors, free Wi-Fi with some having a small patio with a private entrance. The restaurant has local cuisine which you can eat during the summer on the terrace overlooking the water. Dishes offered are reindeer and whale. There's also access to a jacuzzi and sauna and there are also hiking and cross country ski trails right outside your door. 
The many things to do in Kirkenes include the Grenselandsmuseet, which is a museum showing the history of peace and also war along the Russian-Norwegian border. It also has an in depth account of the areas mining industry and Sami art. Every month a Russian Market is held at the towns central square where you can find many authentic Russian handicrafts. From linen cloths, matryoshkas to porcelain and crystal dishes, you can find authentic Russian items.
No matter what you do in the Kirkenes area, we're sure the scenery will be beautiful. As most places in Norway, the drive around the countryside can be breathtaking.
