John Wayne Airport Car Rental - Rental Car Irvine / Costa Mesa Airport
Airport Basics.....
The John Wayne Airport (Orange County Airport) is a facility located between the city of Irvine and Costa Mesa, California. Similar to so many other airports around the world, its practical beginnings were rooted in the second World War, and was eventually commercialized out of opportunity and necessity. The airport currently services almost 10 million passengers per year. Popular direct flights include Atlanta, Portland, Phoenix and many others.
John Wayne Airport is a relatively simple airport to get around, especially considering the amount of air traffic that flies out of the airport. There are two ways to enter the airport, either from Campus Drive or off MacArthur Blvd. Quite often, especially during rush hour, you can get in and out of the airport quicker on Campus Drive. There are multiple parking options. For long term parking there is a paid lot across the 405 Freeway. The lot offers a shuttle to and from the airport approximately every 15 minutes. For easier access, there are parking structures adjacent to the airport with multiple levels to ensure plenty of parking. Recently, John Wayne Airport upgraded their entry system with a ticket-less system. With this system you would simply swipe your card upon entry and then again when you leave. This eliminates the need to keep track of your parking ticket during your trip.
John Wayne Airport Car Rental.....
When arriving into Orange County, you will need to go down to the lower level for baggage claim. There you will also find a help desk as well as the rental car desks to help you (See Picture Below). If you need transportation, all shuttles, limos and taxi cabs can be found on this level across the street in the parking structure. Car Rental companies offering services at the John Wayne Airport include Alamo, Budget, Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Thrifty and National. Each of these companies' counters are situated in the Arrivals section nestled in between A & B Terminals. The return area for the rental cars is in the lower level of the A2 and B2 parking facilities.
If returning an "on-airport" rental car make sure when driving into the airport you pay close attention to the initial signs directing you to arrivals, departures or exit to MacArthur Blvd. It is very easy to miss the lane you need to get in, and if you end up getting dumped onto MacArthur Drive in the left hand turn lane, you will get stuck driving 4-5 blocks before you can turn around to get back to the airport (not a fun prospect when you have already arrived at the airport later than planned for your flight and you are 6 months pregnant and can’t do the run from the parking lot to the terminal!) While 4-5 block might not sound like a lot, but especially during high traffic times, that could easily cost you 15 minutes with the way the lights are timed.
John Wayne "Off-Airport" Car Rental.....
Several other "off-airport" car rentals are available to passengers landing into the John Wayne Airport in need of a rental car. These include: American Eagle Car Rental: (877) 323-9595 - About 3 miles from the airport on 1400 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa. AM - PM Rent-a-Car: (800) 220-4310 - Situated about 3 miles from the airport on 660 Baker St. Costa Mesa, CA Fox / Payless Car Rental (310) 261-4475 - About 3 miles from the John Wayne Airport on 766 St. Clair, Costa Mesa. Stop and Go Rental Car 1 (888) 704-Stop - About 1 Mile form the airport on 18001 Sky Park Circle Suite D
Generally, off airport car rental companies like those four listed above will shuttle you from the airport to their off-site location. They are also much cheaper normally. When using our booking engine to request a John Wayne Airport car rental quote, the cheaper ones (at the top of the list) are typically "off-airport" facilities.
Other Airport Considerations.....
John Wayne is currently expanding and renovating and there will soon be a Terminal and Parking Area C. The check in and security screening at John Wayne is highly efficient. From personal experience, the longest wait to get through security was 15 minutes, and that was during Thanksgiving weekend. Once you get to the waiting area, there is currently only one area for the bathrooms. It is located right between Terminals A and B. The mens' bathroom is on the side of Terminal B and the women’s is on the side of Terminal A.
There are a few eating options. There is a café located in between Terminals A and B. The food is decent for airport food and the service is generally fairly quick. Additional there is a deli desk in Terminal B that has hot and cold sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies and drinks. A McDonald’s, gift shop and Starbucks cart are located in either terminal as well as a location in each terminal (as well as in the café) where you can have a pre-flight cocktail. Don't forget to stop by Caterina's and pick up a little candy. They sure have a lot to offer.
