Many years ago, the Jacksonville Airport (JAX) was just plain. It was small and typical for the time. That was then…this is now! And, boy, what a difference a century makes! Sleek, clean, beautiful…stunning! Jacksonville International Airport has grown up and progressed into the 21st Century.
Located off Interstate 95, just north of Jacksonville, exits to the Jacksonville Airport are well marked with signs directing you easily to where you want to go. If you've not been back in many years, the most immediate change you'll see upon arrival is the security. Security when you enter the property is extremely efficient, to the point of relaxing! You'll find there are 8 parking choices if you have to leave your vehicle, reasonably priced and all of them with consideration for the disabled.
Rental cars are in abundance at the Jacksonville Airport. You'll find there are currently seven airport car rental companies with desks set up near the baggage claim area. These include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and Thrifty. All are of course located on the lower level of the terminal building. And, of course, you can't really go wrong with any of these. They didn't become world leaders by offering passengers shoddy service and poor car choices.
After motoring out of the facility with your rented car, you may find that it would be great to tour local areas, and you would be right. You'll find that you will exit on the Airport Exit, which turns quickly into Dixie Clipper Road, which eventually turns into Airport Road. Traveling out of the facility in your rental car, watch for overhead blue or green signs directing you on your path. If traveling to the city of Jacksonville, you will travel South on 95 about 2 miles from the airport. Merge onto 95 South and travel on that road all of the way into Jacksonville. Total distance from the airport to Jacksonville is about 14 miles.
When returning your rental vehicle from Jacksonville, you will essentially reverse the directions above and travel North from Jacksonville on 95 to the Jacksonville International Airport Exit. This exit road is called Duval Road. After taking the exit and traveling on the airport road, you will notice an Exxon gas station on the right hand side of the road - immediately following a Denny's restaurant. This would be a great place to re-fuel before returning your rental car. Below is a picture on 95, traveling back to the airport.
If you know how long you’re going to be gone, you can board your pet(s) at a wonderful and caring Pet Paradise Resort right at the airport. Open 24 hours, this convenience is great when you have to take an unexpected flight out for an emergency.
Jacksonville International offers free Wi-Fi. And, if you didn’t bring your laptop, JAX does offer a fully-equipped computer facility as well as additional business services for the business traveler.
Thinking of everything to keep you distracted, the Courtyard has an art exhibition shown by Haskell Art Gallery and a place to get your shoes shined. Put your feet up in a rocking chair while you listen to live music. Throughout the terminal are news stands, clothing shops, (for that Jaguar Football trinket you forgot to get before you came to the airport), and, of course, food!
Dining options are abundant within the facility, both pre-security and post-security. Offering full service dining to fast food, the choices are innumerable. Ice cream, Italian, hot dogs, Cinnabon or Starbucks…JAX has it all.
The facility also has a prayer/meditation area where you can go and spend some time with God. This room is on the upper level.
