Horta Airport Car Rental
The Horta Airport is situated in Castelo Branco and is 6 to 10 minutes away from the town of Horta in the Azores. The city of Horta is located in the western region of the Azore Archipelago. The city population is a little over 15,000 if the surrounding areas are included. Within the city the number is 7000. 
You'll definitely want to see the airport by rental car and the Car Rental companies at the airport include Ilha Verde and Auto Turistica Faialense. These rental cars are located on the airport premises, so a shuttle won't be necessary.
To understand the layout of Horta a little better you need to know first, that the R1-1 road essentially circles the perimeter of the island of Horta. The airport is at the bottom south-end of the island and the town of Horta is in the middle of the island about a 30-minute drive from the airport. The city of Horta is approximately 18 km from the airport.
After getting your car head out and get on R1-1. Take this road for around 2 km. You want to veer off to the left and get on Travessa do Pedregulho. Then make a left on Canada da Faia. You'll pass some houses on the right side of the road. Then make a right on R. da Granja. At this point you'll be traveling through a small town and through a residential area. Make a slight left going toward R. da Granja and keep following the road.
Make a right and then a left quickly and keep following the road for 3.3km. It's a winding uphill road going toward Horta. It's mostly countryside with very few houses. You are going to make a right onto Estr. Regional 1-2 and continue to follow the road for another 1.3 km. You're then going to make a left on Estr. Regional 1-2/R2-2 and follow this for 4km. You can't miss the turnoff because there will be some building on the left as you turn. After winding up the mountain make a left on R2-2. Drive this for another 2.3 km. After around 2.3 km you'll need to make a left turn and follow this road for another 2.5 km. It will be a long winding road with many switchbacks up the mountain until you reach the city. 
The airport has many dining and shopping opportunities to make you stay before and after your flight more enjoyable. Visit the variety of shops and see what they offer you. These include:
