Harstad Airport Car Rental

Harstad/Narvik Airport Basics.....

The Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE) is in the municipality of Evenes. The airport handles over 500,000 passengers a year. It serves Narvik and Harstad and is not to be confused with a smaller airport named the Lofoten International. The Evenes or Harstad/Narvik is the larger airport that has direct flights going to Oslo.

Harstad is known for being the natural center for the area, it's only 250 km from the Artic Circle.  Northern Norway's oil industry is centered in the city of Harstad.  The port and the agricultural regions in the area are also a foundation for it's economy. One of the reasons for the rich fertile soil is planting on the old seabed.  Even though it is near the Artic Circle it still has mild winters and cool summers because of the ocean climate in the area. The winter temperatures are actually warmer than other world cities such as Chicago, Bejing and Toronto. During the summer, the midnight sun can be enjoyed as well as the Northern Lights in the winter months.

Harstad Airport Car Rental.....

There are six car rental companies at the Harstad Airport in Norway.  These include Avis, Europcar, Budget, Hertz, Sixt and Rent-A-Wreck.  Cars are located very near the terminal.

To get to the community of Harstad is not difficult.  You will find that your drive from the airport is around 44 km from the airport and takes about 40 minutes to an hour to arrive.  Again, although it's a relatively long drive from the airport, it's a very easy one.

After picking up your car, take Rv833 out of the airport going towards E10.  Make a left on E10.  There will be signs pointing toward Narvik in one direction and Harstad in the other.  Go towards Harstad.  This segment of road lasts for 19 km driving the countryside.  You'll approach only one traffic circle and you'll want to take the very first exit onto  Rv83.  In fact, you're actually just going through the circle and continue on for another 24 km.  You'll roll right into the center of town.

To get back to the airport from the Harstad community, you will essentially reverse the directions above.  Also, remember to re-fuel your rental vehicle before returning the rental car.  To do so, we recommend using a Statoil service station less than 1 km from the airport.  The station will be on the left-hand side as you travel back to the airport.  It is the closest station that we know of, and the only one within 20 km of the airport terminal.

Things to See in Your Harstad Airport Car Rental.....

The Harstad area has had huge archaeological discoveries. Many bronze artifacts have been found at the Trodenes peninsula that date back 3000 years. This is an indication of a Bronze Age culture very well developed. The city holds an annual festival that lasts for a whole week.  Harstad is also the port for the oldest sailing schooner in the world named the Anna Rogde.  In her day it was Norway's sailing queen.  You can visit the Grottebadet, a great indoor water park situated under the town in caves. It has everything from Jacuzzis, pools, saunas and a beach cafe.

There are historic and famous trading posts like the Sandtorgholmen Hotel and Røkenes Farm that are very old buildings and can't help take back visitors in time. Also, you'll get great service and the food is also fantastic at these places.  Relive the Viking history at the Trondenes Peninsula and also take the time to visit World War II's largest land cannon, and a church built by the Vikings about 800 years ago (see picture of church below).  You can experience all this at the Trondenes Heritage Center.

Also at the schooner you can participate in many activities such as killer whale safaris, fishing and also team building. You will find just about every type of environment in Harstad from mountains, beaches, lakes, rivers, fjords to hike, explore and even bicycle the archipelago of Bjarkoy, Grytoy, Krottoy.
