Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Car Rental

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Background…

Long before the Greenville-Spartanburg merger, both cities had separate airports that competed fiercely for business. Many of the Upstate area business leaders finally got together and decided that enough was enough; it was time for a shared centralized airport. In 1958 they brought a proposal to the two cities for an airport that would be built between them. It was quickly approved and construction began immediately. The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport was opened in 1962 and became the major airport in the area over night.

The airport sits on thirty-five hundred acres of land and has an eleven thousand foot long runway. The airport has a single terminal with two connecting concourses and has seen the typical expansions and renovations you would expect it to have done over the last few decades. In 2012, a four year improvement program was approved for the terminal. It seeks to modernize the airport and prepare it for further expansion plans such as the addition of a second runway and the tripling of the airport as a whole.

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Car Rentals…

The airport offers the car rental services of six national rental agencies: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National. All six agencies are located on airport grounds, but away from the main terminal. To reach the car rental area you’ll have to take the free airport shuttle that runs between the rental car area and the main terminal at regular intervals. Once you’ve finished filling out whatever rental agreement you’ve found acceptable, you will be given the keys to your rental and directed to the company’s lot.

But as of now (2012), there is a major renovation taking place with rental cars being near the front in many of the changes. The car rental counter will be in Garage A, as will the rental cars themselves. These changes are part of larger-scale renovations that are being done throughout the facility.

Greenville Airport to Greenville or Spartanburg Directions…

All of the rental car locations release you from Industrial Park Rd, just south of the main terminal. Luckily, a secondary exit was created around the rental car area so that you don’t have to drive all the way around the airport and out the main exit. Instead, drive down Industrial Park Rd, take a right onto Airport Rd and then almost immediately take a left onto GSP Drive. Take the first left you come across on GSP Drive and you’ll soon reach the I-85 on-ramp where you’ll have to make a decision.

Of course in the future, you will be leaving from the garage in front of the terminal, so you will exit via the Airport Drive and merge onto I-85, then take I-385 into the city. To get to Spartanburg you’ll have to take I-85 North to I-26 South until you reach the State Highway 29 exit. Take a left onto State Highway 29 and it will eventually turn into W Main St before it dumps you right into downtown Spartanburg.

Greenville Airport Car Rental Return…

When you want to return your vehicle you can use the same exit describe above as an entrance. The I-85 exit you’re looking for is County Road 14, and the closest gas stations are located to both the right and left of the off-ramp. If you’re coming from Greenville and want to try a different exit, get off at County Rd 312 and take a left from the off-ramp. You’ll see a Spinx at the first major intersection you come across. From the Spartanburg side of I-85 you’ll find a Spinx by exiting onto Country Road 101 and taking a right.
