Gdansk Airport Car Rental

Gdansk Airport Basics.....

Gdansk Airport (GDN) is situated 12 km outside of the city of Gdansk.  It also know as the Lech Walesa airport being named after a former president of Poland.  The former president's actual signature can be found outside on the wall of the main terminal building and it's also the airport's logo.

The airport handles up to 1.5 million passengers a year with 50 percent of those being International travelers.  It's been privately owned since 1993 and is often used as an alternate airport for the Warsaw airport when the weather is bad or in case of emergencies.  There's continual expansion with a new terminal being opened this year to meet demands.

Gdansk Airport Car Rentals and Driving Guide.....

A car rental will make your stay so much more fun and convenient.  There are several car rental companies to choose from at the Gdansk Airport including AutoSwiat-Polska, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt and Dollar.  Each of these car rental companies would make a fine choice to travel throughout the area.

To get to Gdansk isn't difficult.  You will find that Gdansk is a 16 km drive from the airport and takes approximately 25-30 minutes by car.  After picking up the car you want to head out of the airport and turn right on Juliusza Slowackiego going toward Smiglowa. Follow this road for 2 to 3 km.  You're going to turn off onto Aleja Kazimierza Jagiellonczyka.  There will be trucking company to the right side of the road as you turn.  Follow this highway for 2.8 km.  Get off on the  Kartuska exit and then make a left on Kartuska You'll be crossing over Aleja Kazimierza Jagiellonczyka.  Follow this road for 1.4 km. Make a right on Aleja Armii Krajowej.  Everything is pretty rural, but there will be a lot of development on the right as you make your turn. You're going to follow this road for 7 km.
As you get into town, make a left onto wezel Carla Groddecka.  There will be many buildings a little ways off that you will see as you're making the left.  Wezel Carla Groddecka turns into 3 Maja. You'll be driving parallel to the cityscape and all the city buildings already mentioned.  You'll then make a right onto Hucisko driving towards them.  You will approach a turning circle and at this point you are pretty much in the center of town.

Amenities at the Airport.....

The Gdansk airport does have some basic shopping, dining and other services while you are waiting for your flight. These include the Voyage Cafe, Fly Bar, Bar Inter Gastr and Kolporter, just to name a few.  For you travelers that enjoy hopping on the interenet while waiting for your flight, you'll be glad to know that the Gdansk airport offers free Wi-Fi to its patrons.

The downside to the Gdansk airport is that most folks agree it's just too small to handle the traffic that goes thru it.  Often, security check points are narrowed to only one line, as are check in areas.  Restrooms are not abundant and waiting rooms are small.  Other than the overall "smallness" of the airport, by all accounts the Gdansk airport is not too bad.

Gdansk Area Rental Car Attractions.....

Gdansk is the 4th biggest metropolitan area located right on the Baltic coast.  The population is around 460,000 making it the largest city in the region of Pomenerania in North Poland.  Poland's principal seaport is in Gdansk and because the waterways comprise 60 percent of the area and connect to the City of Warsaw, this is an advantage for sea trade and makes the seaport very important.  Gdansk is also the origin of the solidarity movement, which was a large factor to ending communism.

Most of the sights to see are situated near the Long Street or Long Market area just for pedestrians and sightseeing.  The street is comprised of 17th century buildings and named by many the Royal Road because this used to be the place where processions took place for visiting royalty and kings.  Walking from end to end, the different attractions include (but are certainly not limited to) the Upland Gate, Long Street, Uphagen House, Golden Gate, Prison Tower and Artus' Court.
