Fuerteventura Airport Car Rental

Fuerteventura Airport Basics.....

The El Matorral Airport, as it is sometimes known, was constructed some 50 years ago.  When tourists began flooding into the Island of Fuerteventura, it was determined that an airport was needed, and soon after, was built to accommodate those tourists.  The airport has consistently grown to the point now where it runs around 4 million passengers thru the turnstiles every year.

Fuerteventura Airport Car Rental.....

Car Rental companies such as Cicar, Avis, Hertz, Payless and TopCar each populate the airport arrivals area near the terminal exits.  When you pick up your baggage after flying into the airport, you will see the car rental companies facing the baggage claim area.  If you already have booked a car when you land into the airport, check in with your car rental agent to get the keys to your rental vehicle.

After landing into the Fuerteventura Airport, many folks soon travel to Puerto del Rosario.  To do so yourself, simply exit the terminal traffic circle and watch for signs.  You will see a large white sign planted next to the traffic circle that will direct you to the third exit and on towards the FV-2 ramp.  Travel about 5 km right into the town of Puerto del Rosario.  When returning from Puerto del Rosario, simply reverse the directions and travel South on FV-2.

Currently, most car rental companies that we work with operate on a 'full-full' fuel policy.  This simply means that you will pick up the rental car with a full tank of fuel and you should return it with a full tank of fuel.  To re-fuel your rental car tank before returning, we generally recommend that you re-fuel at a Disa Fueling Station about 2 or 3 km from the airport (about 4 or 5 km out of Puerto del Rosario).  Simply refuel and return your car back to the airport.  Remember to watch for signs directing you to the rental car parking area at the airport.

To get to Corralejo Beach (see picture below), simply bypass the city of Puerto del Rosario via FV-3, hop back on FV-1 after bypassing Puerto del Rosario and travel another 27 km all the way to the northern beach of Corralejo.  To the South is Caleta de Fuest.

Things to do Near the Fuerteventura Airport.....

About 8 km South of the Fuerteventura Airport sits an attraction called Cool Runnings, which is a guided trike excursion.  If you're going to take one excursion on the island, make this the one.  From the service that you'll experience when you first contact Cool Runnings, to the actual excursion, you'll be very impressed all the way thru the process.  You'll find this to be the highlight of your Fuerteventua vacation.  Drive your rental car South on FV-2 about 8 km until you get into the Fustes Area near the coast.  The Cool Runnings location will be downtown.

Other Fuerteventura Airport Rental Car Notes.....

As mentioned above, most rental cars out of the airport are still operating on a 'full-full' fuel policy.  But the trend - especially in Spain - is that rental car companies are migrating towards the 'full-empty' fuel policy.  This means you will pick up your rental car with a full tank of fuel, and you should return it with an empty tank.  Obviously, a 'full-empty' creates a dangerous condition where car renters are enticed to drive on fumes back to the airport.  Please check your fuel policy when booking.

Types of vehicles available at the Fuerteventura Airport include the basic economy cars, but also some vehicles with a little more zing.  SUV's, luxury cars and minivans (7-passenger and 9-passengers as well) are generally available for rent too.  Rental car prices can be very affordable on the island.  From 10-15 EUR per day, you can get in an economy, basic rental car.

Finally, we want to thank you for visiting our site.  We hoped you learned something about renting a car on the Fuerteventura Airport!
