Fredericton Airport Car Rental

Fredericton International Airport Background…

For almost thirty years the City of Fredericton tried unsuccessfully to get a municipal airport until Barker’s Point Aerodrome was created and used in the late 1940s to early 1950s. Unfortunately, when the area finally got its own airport, it turned out to be privately owned and the lease on the land was left un-renewed to close. By the end of 1951, the city had lost its first airport.

Around the time the first airport was wrapping things up and closing, construction on the airport that now stands as Fredericton International Airport started underway. The first runway for the airport was completed in 1949 and allowed officials from the Department of Transportation, a precursor to Transport Canada, to land and discuss the new airport project. The city and Department of Transportation agreed on a joint effort where the city would build the terminal while the department would build the rest of the airport. The airport was opened in 1951, a couple years after the agreement was signed and has had a typical history ever since.

Fredericton International Airport Car Rentals…

There are four internationally renowned car rental agencies found on-site at Fredericton International Airport. Once you’ve side off into the terminal and made your way to the baggage claim area you should see Avis, Budget, Hertz, and National waiting for you in nearby booths. If you don’t, consult one of the many directories scattered throughout the airport or as an employee nearby for help.

After you’ve signed all the required rental agreements, you’ll be handed the keys to your car and directed to the rental lot just outside the terminal where it is located. Walk right out of the front of the main terminal, and the rental car parking area will be across the road – but to the right.  Cars are located in a new parking area all by themselves.  Don’t forget to check your car over for dings, dents and a full tank before leaving to experience all that Fredericton has to offer.

Fredericton Airport Directions to Downtown…

The airport is located outside of the city limits, just south east of the city. To get to the Downtown Fredericton area is incredibly easy, but it does take about fifteen minutes. You’ll start your journey by taking any of the exits (currently there is only one, but there could be more in the future as currently you have to travel back in front of the terminal if you rent a car) leading out of the airport to Lincoln Rd and turning left. For about twelve kilometers you’re going to follow the river that runs through the town via Lincoln Rd until you can turn right onto Waterloo Row. The street name will change into Queen St before you have to take a right onto York St, but just continue forward. Once you turn onto York St, you’ve made it to Downtown Fredericton.

Fredericton Airport Car Rental Return…

Getting your car back to the airport is pretty simple.  Reverse the directions above and travel back via Lincoln Rd.  Before getting back we generally recommend that you pull over at 1853 Lincoln Rd.  This is the address of an Esso Station on the right-hand side as you travel back to the airport.  It’s actually called Lincoln Mini Mart and might be a great place to pick up a soda and a snack before getting back on the airplane.

After filling up the rental, get back on Lincoln and travel back to the airport.  As you deliver the car back to the airport, remember that you will need to drive right in front of the terminal to get to the parking lot.  Give the keys to the agent inside of the terminal, just to be on the safe side.

Other Car Rental Options at Fredericton International Airport…

Being the main airport in the region, the four rental companies at Fredericton International work tirelessly to equip each customer with the rental car he or she desires. However, if you’re looking for something specific or need a special service carried out before you pick up the rental then you’ll have to call as far ahead as possible or else do without. Rarely is someone’s car available at the last minute.

Also, the Canadian countryside is just as beautiful as it is expansive. If you’re planning on doing a lot of traveling during your vacation, then I suggest you pick up a GPS system from whichever rental company you choose to work with. They all offer their own system for only a few more dollars a day, which is well worth the time and money you’ll end up saving in the end. So make sure you reserve your GPS system when you reserve your vehicle today.

Other Fredericton Downtown Car Rental Locations...

Other rental locations in Fredericton include an Avis location at 551 King Street.  This location is in the heart of downtown Fredericton – just a couple of blocks from the Saint John River.  Prices for this location will be slightly cheaper but the options and choices downtown won’t match what you should expect at the airport.  Use our booking engine above, and give both a try.  See what comes up and make your decision based on all the factors.

Finally, we want to thank you for visiting our site.  We hope you learned a little about Fredericton rental cars!
