Fort Myers Airport Car Rental

Southwest Florida International Airport Background…

Southwest Florida International Airport is one of the youngest airports in the United States. It first opened in 1983 under the name Southwest Florida Region Airport, which didn’t change to International until ten years later even though it first started hosting international flights in 1984. What changed in 1993 was the runway, which was lengthened to support more international traffic than before. The primary international stop for the airport is Germany. The airport services about seven and a half million people each year.

Southwest Florida International Car Rentals...

There are nine car rental companies that offer their services to passengers flying in to Southwest Florida International, eight of which are located on-site. The eight located on site are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise, National and Thrifty. All on-site car rental services can be accessed via the Rental Car Service Center located on the ground floor of the parking garage – which is directly located in front of the terminal.

Advantage is located off the airport at 9931 Interstate Commerce Drive and can be reached by a shuttle on the parking garage’s eastern end of the lower level.  To get to that shuttle area, simply walk out of the baggage claim door and walk across the street in front of you.  The Advantage shuttle bus will be around the corner of the parking garage.

Driving From the Airport to Fort Myers…

Southwest Florida International is just outside of the Fort Myers city limits, but it isn’t the usual destination most Florida travelers choose to visit. To get to Fort Myers, you’ll have to follow the Terminal Access Road away from the airport and take a right onto Treeline Ave S. Follow Treeline to County Highway 876, also known as Daniels Parkway, and then take a left. Soon after you take a left, you’ll come across an I-75 on ramp. Take I-75 North to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd exit and go left. You’ll be able to follow the road all the way into the heart of Fort Myers.

If you’re looking to go to one of the main Floridian attractions, mainly Orlando or Miami, then you have quite a drive ahead of you. You’ll start the same way you did last time, except you’ll take a left off of Terminal Access Road onto Ben Hill Griffin Parkway instead. Follow it until you reach Alico Road, onto which you’ll take a right, and then get onto I-75 South. You’ll follow I-75 for a long while until you reach Fort Lauderdale and I-95. Then take I-95 North to Orlando or I-95 South to Miami. If the third Florida hotspot, Tampa, is your destination, then take I-75 North all the way there.

Fort Myers Airport Car Rental Return…

If traveling back from Fort Myers, you’ll probably take exit 131 off of I-75 to the airport.  Once you take your exit, you will take the first left onto Daniels Parkway.  Drive for a bit, and you’ll see a BP on the corner of Treeline and Daniels.  Fill up at the BP, and then take Treeline South all the way to Terminal Access Road.  Watch for blue overhead signs directing you to the car rental return area, and then find the rental car company of your choice.  Remember, these directions are for folks who aren’t using Advantage Car Rentals – who are located off-site.

Car Rental Options at Southwest Florida International Airport…

Florida is one of the national car rental revenue leaders in the U.S. The place sees so much travel and tourist action that rental companies would be crazy not to offer any Florida tourist coming in from any Florida airport the most it possibly could, meaning you can get just about anything and everything from one car rental company or another at Southwest Florida International. SUVs, off road vehicles, four-door luxury sedans, coups, etc. You can even rent a limo or hire a taxi driver if need be.

Just remember, if you want a particular type of vehicle then you’re going to have to make a reservation. Otherwise you run the risk of it already have been rented out to someone else upon your arrival.
