Dublin Airport Car Rental

Dublin Airport Basics.....

The Dublin Airport commenced operations in 1940 with one little airplane headed to Liverpool.  Today, total passenger count ranges to about 2 million passengers per month - coming and going.

Recently (2010), Terminal 2 opened to accommodate most of the long-distance carriers that go in and out of the Dublin Airport.  As such, T2 now handles far and away most of the traffic that goes thru the Dublin Airport.  Now with multiple terminals, car rental customers can find that rental car companies offer services at both terminals.

Dublin Airport Car Rental.....

Renting a car at the Dublin Airport isn't difficult with all of choices you have available to you.  Hertz, Budget, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Thrifty, Enterprise, Dan Dooley and County Car Rentals each offer car rentals at the Dublin Airport.  Many of these car rental companies have desks situated in both of the terminals (1 & 2), but a few (Thrifty, Enterprise, and Sixt) can only be found in T1.

With the opening of the new terminal, things are now done differently than they were before the new terminal was completed.  Depending on which terminal you land into, you will find cars parked at (or near) both terminals.

For example, at T1, vehicles will be parked in a multi-story lot at Block C, and the rental cars at T2 will be parked in a multi-story building connected to T2 - appropriately titled the short-term, multi-story car park.  Both are enclosed garages and are easily accessible.  Make sure that you speak to your rental agent about the exact location of your car before you walk out of the building.

Directions to Dublin from the Airport...

As you taxi around the traffic circle, notice the blue signs directing you to the city of Dublin.  You will exit off of the traffic circle heading due East.  Travel a little less than 1 km until you approach a larger traffic circle.  Go around the traffic circle, take the second exit, continue to watch for blue signs as you taxi around the circle and travel South onto the M1 ramp, traveling to M50.  You will soon be on a partial toll road and thru a tunnel.  The total distance you should travel from the second traffic circle to the weird intersection at East Wall Road (after the tunnel) will be almost 10 km.

To get back to the airport from Dublin, you will basically reverse the directions above.  If re-fueling your rental car you will want do that near the airport if you can.  One good place that we recommend is an Esso Station on Swords Road past the Hertz, Europcar and Sixt car rental return area.  When exiting off of M1, you will travel to the roundabout near the airport that we spoke of earlier.  Turn left as returning your rental vehicle and drive about 2.5 km.  The Esso station sits on the right hand side of the road.  A little further down that road will be the car rental return for Avis, Thrifty, National, Dollar and Enterprise.  Shuttle services will deliver you back to the terminal.

Hotels Near the Dublin Airport.....

Premier Inn Dublin Airport Hotel - This is a great choice if you need to stay a night near the Dublin Airport.  It's not exactly on the airport premises, but is about a 10-minute drive away.  It's not difficult to get there, but it's not within walking distance either.  To get there, we recommend traveling North on R132 at the smaller traffic circle nearest the airport exit.  Drive about 1.9 km and turn right just past a Texaco Station on the left.  You will see the hotel once you turn into the road.  If you're not driving, pick up one of the hotel shuttles.  It runs every 30 minutes and the charge for that service is €1.  You can't beat that.

Prices at the Premier Inn near the Dublin Airport can get as low as €60 to €70 per night.  Almost everyone who stays at this hotel loves it, mentioning its cleanliness, low price, friendliness, convenience, and great breakfast.
