Dresden Airport (DRS) is now officially called the Dresden International as of September of 2008. It handles close to 2 million passengers a year and continues to get busier and busier every year.
Dresden is located near the Czech border on the Elbe River. The city itself is called the jewel box mainly because of the rococo and baroque city center. A lot of the city was destroyed in bombings during World War II, but reconstruction and restoration has aided in preserving the inner city which included the Semper Oper, Dresdner Frauenkirche and Katholische Hofkirche.
Dresden Airport Car Rental and Driving Guide.....
All rentals can be picked up just outside the main terminal entrance at the airport - at Level 0 of the Multi-Story Car Park (see the picture below with the terminal and the car park across the road). Walking out the front of the terminal, you can't miss it, as the car park sits right across the road from the terminal. The rental agencies include ADAC, Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
Getting to the city of Dresden via car rental will take you approximately 25-35 minutes and is roughly 16km. Leaving the airport you will turn right onto 97 (Hermann Reichelt Strasse), then left on 97 (Flughafenstrasse) as if traveling to Radeburg. Signs will be fairly well-marked, but drive slow as not to miss them. Watch for yellow signs planted next to the road. After turning onto the 97 Flughafenstrasse traveling South, you will continue South for about 5.6 km, watching for the directions to "Zentrum" - which translates to center, or city center of Dresden.After the 5.6 km mentioned above, you will approach a 'Y'. Veer right towards the Zentrum area again. Travel a couple of more km and you will reach the center of Dresden area.
Getting your rental car back to the airprot from Dresden will eventually use the same roads, only in reverse. When leaving the airport in your rental car to Dresden, you may have noticed an Agip Petrol fueling station at the corner of the Hermann-Reichelt-Straße road and the Flughafenstraße/B97 roads mentioned above. This would be a great place to re-fuel before rerurning your rental car back to the Dresden Airport.
When returning your rental car, remember to park the rental vehicle in the area where you originally collected it. The signs are pretty good leading you back to the multi-story car park. After you turn left in to the facility (right next to the tower with the white ball on top, you will soon notice white overhead signage leading you back into the appropriate car park bay.

Dresden since 1990 has again become a very important city for education, culture and politics. The city has been labeled as one of the greenest cities in Europe. A remarkable 60 plus percent of it being forests and green areas. Included in these green areas are four nature reserves, special areas for conservation, protected gardens, natural monuments, old graveyards, parks and pathways. One notable area is the Elbe meadows which spans a 20 km area in the city.
Dresden is also the home of many notable art collections. Many famous artists, musicians are a part of the city. Opera is prominent with the Saxon State Opera (see picture below) and the Dresden State Theater. Also choirs are very big in the city with the most popular being the Choir of The Holy Cross, a long time and world renowned boys choir. They are always having outdoor concert series during the summer which includes music and dance every year in June with the biggest event being the Bunte Republik Neustadt.
