Dortmund Airport Car Rental
Dortmund Airport (DTM) is situated 10 km outside of the city of Dortmund. It's also known as Dortmund Airport 21 because of the fact that the utility company in Dortmund is the major shareholder. The airport's passenger capacity is 2.5 million passengers annually. In the past it has been a rather small airport, but in recent years has many mainstream commercial services running in and out of the airport. Most of the flights though are low cost airlines providing economy flights. Future plans for the airport include lengthening the runway, increasing flight hours, having a direct connection between the airport and city via mass transit and expanding and improving the terminal area to increase capacity as well as convenience. 
Car Rental companies with offices set up in the Dortmund Airport include Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Hertz Car Rental. Each company's car rental desk is situated near the terminal exits. Cars are stored on the facility. Inquire at the car rental company's desk of your car's location upon arriving at the Dortmund Airport.
The trip to Dortmund will be around 10 km from the airport and will take approximately 15- 20 minutes to get into town. After picking up the car, you want to get onto Flughafenring leaving the airport. Follow this road and it turns into Nordstraße/L677. Go through the stop light and you will see an Esso gas station on the far right corner of the intersection.
You will then get on the ramp to get on B1 going to Dortmund. Get on B1 and follow the highway for 9.3 km. You are then going to want to take the exit to get to DO-Zentrum/DO-Hörde. After getting off, make a right on Karl-Marx-Straße. It comes up quick so be on the look out for the turn. You will have gone too far if you pass a yellow directional sign with an arrow and a U on the top left corner of the sign. You then want to go down and pass the first right and make a turn on the second right on Deggingstraße. Then take a left onto Von-den-Berken-Straße and your pretty much in the center of the city.
Remember when returning your vehicle, you will want to re-fuel near the airport. The Esso service station mentioned above would make a great choice to re-fuel. It basically sits at the corner of the Chaussee/L821 road and the Nordstraße/L677 road. 
Hotel Lohenstein - This hotel offers a comfortable room and relaxing atmosphere. The rooms are cozy and come with Wi-Fi, minibar and TV. It's only a mile away from the airport and offers free parking for your rental car. You can have a buffet breakfast everyday and they have a very comfortable lobby with comfortable sofas, chairs and a large screen TV to relax and unwind from the day with family and friends. Although a breakfast is served each day, you can find many restaurants nearby offering lunch and dinner daily.
Balladins Hotel at the Dortmund Airport - This is a 4 star hotel that's situated in the industrial district of town only 2 miles away from the airport. Free parking and Wi-Fi are standard and all rooms have a safe and satellite TV. The hotel has a restaurant that offers a variety of meals as well as drinks served by the bar. Adjacent to the hotel is a fitness center that has racquetball, badminton, tennis, solarium, sauna and a pool table.
Holiday Inn Express Dortmund - This hotel is a little further from the airport. The rooms have air conditioning, Internet, and coffee makers. Also Wi-Fi is available in all areas throughout the hotel. They have a daily buffet breakfast and a bar to relax at with drinks for fun and conversation.
The basics are found at the airport for your travel convenience and comfort. These include both a travel shop and a Heinemann Duty Free. Each of these offer a wide selection of items including spirits, perfumes and cosmetics at always very reasonable duty free prices. All passengers on domestic and international flights are allowed to make purchases.
Also there are some pretty great services that they offer for those making purchases at the shop. For instance, you can pre-order online and then pick your items up when you arrive. They will also care for all of your purchases until you come back from traveling to the airport to depart. 
Dortmund is the 7th biggest city in Germany with a population of nearly 600,000. The Dortmund Port is considered one of Europe's largest canal ports which is connected to the North Sea. The city is also considered the “Green Metropolis” because almost half of the city consists of woodland, waterways, green spaces and agriculture. This is kind of a contrast because the history of the city has largely been about steel milling and coal mining within the city for the last 100 years.
The city is rich in medieval architecture highlighted by the Marienkirche and Reinoldikirche. The center of the city still is outlined by the old medieval city and there is actually a road that marks where the wall used to be.
