Cork Airport Car Rental

Cork Airport Basics.....

The Cork Airport operates as the major gateway to Southern Ireland.  There are two runways with thirty airlines and one terminal at the Cork Airport.  Total passenger traffic for 2010 was almost 2.5 million.  Passenger movement had run over 3 million for about 4 years in a row - one can only assume that the drop-off can be attributed to the global economic slowdown Europe has experienced over the last couple of years.

Cork Airport Car Rental.....

The airport currently houses five car rental companies.  Avis, Budget, 353 Car Rental, Hertz and Alamo each have representation within the Arrivals area of the terminal.  Also, Enterprise, Sixt and Thrifty may be used as long as prior booking is made.  The car rental area in the arrivals hall at the Cork Airport is easy to find and navigate thru.  There is actually a Starbucks Coffee location right next to the car rental area.  Pick up a quick cup for your drive out of the facility.

For most car rental companies, you will be shuttled to the car rental location very, very near the airport.  In fact Hertz, Avis and Europcar's car parks are within walking distance of the airport.  However, shuttle options are available.  After picking up your rental vehicle, you will want to exit the area and, most likely, point your car in the direction of Cork.  As you leave the Cork Airport Business Park, you will travel to a roundabout and turn left (North) on N27.  Watch for green signs planted next to the road.  Continue on N27 for about 2.5 to 3 km until you approach another roundabout.  Go underneath an underpasss bridge and veer left.  Again, note green signs near the road pointing you to "City Centre" via N27.  Also, notice the N27 painted on highways as you travel North.  Continue on N27 for another 3 km, give or take a little.  N27 will eventually turn to the right.  To travel into the heart of Cork, travel straight on Eglinton.  You will enter via the Clontarf Bridge that is fixed over the South Lee Channel.

When returning your rental vehicle back to the Cork Airport, you will essentially reverse the directions above, if traveling from Cork.  One thing to note, when you arrive at the Airport Road, your rental car returns will be on the right hand side.

Use one of the roundabouts after the rental car facilities to reverse your direction.  Also note that there is a Topaz gas fueling station near the Hertz facility on the Airport Road.  This might be a good place to refuel before finally returning your vehicle to the proper rental agency facility.  Below is a road leading back to the Cork Airport.

Airport Amenities.....

At the Cork Airport, you will have some choices in terms of what to eat.  Both before and after security, there are restaurants and bars.  Cork's Food Market, The Red Bar, Lir Cafe and Subway are situated within the airport in various places.

The Loop offers some pretty good shopping.  Try some of their local foods such as smoked salmon and various cheeses.  The Loop promises to never higher than prices on similar items sold downtown.  If you find a cheaper price on any item, they will double the difference.  Of course, terms and conditions apply.

Hotels Near the Cork Airport.....

One nice feature of the Cork Airport is the Cork Hotel.  Situated within a 3 minute walk of the airport sits a pretty decent place to stay.  Rates are currently (Fall of 2011) as low as € 69.00 EUR Per Room per Night.  The airport decor dominates the look and feel, and by most accounts, the hotel is comfortable, the staff friendly, and the food good.  As far as airport hotels go, this one is superb.
