Columbus Airport Car Rental

Port Columbus International Airport Background…

The airport was originally opened in 1929 on a site that was chosen by Charles Lindbergh, a famous U.S. Air Mail pilot. The terminal and hangars are still in use today. The old terminal building is rentable office space, and the hangars are still used as hangars. A new terminal building was created in 1958. Other improvements include a major seventy million dollar renovation that was completed in 1979 in honor of the airport’s fiftieth anniversary. It opened a second terminal, now known as Concourse B, and enabled the airport to up its daily flights from seventy-two to two hundred and fifty. In 1989 another seven-gate concourse was added, and in 2000 a complete renovation of the terminal was completed to include more retail and concession stores.

Welcome to Columbus

Port Columbus Airport Car Rentals…

There are eight on-site car rental companies that can be found in bank teller formation at the ground level of the parking garage. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty are the eight agencies you can choose from. With no off-site car rental companies located anywhere near the airport, you don’t have to worry about finding a shuttle to board. Once you rent your vehicle you simply pick it up from the parking garage.

To get to downtown Columbus you’ll have to follow International Gateway to I-670 West. From there you can run straight into the winding mess of streets in the middle of Columbus and try to pick your way through the city from there. The easiest method to get into the heart of downtown is to merge right onto I-71 South and take the first exit you come across. Take a right after you get off the off-ramp and you’ve made it to your destination.

Port Columbus Car Rental Return…

The closest gas station by the airport is Speedway, which can be found by driving down International Gateway and under the interstate until you reach Airport Drive. If you’d rather fill up at the BP, which is the second closest gas station, either follow Airport Dr down until you reach it or take I-670 West and get off at the E 5th Ave exit. Take a right onto E 5th Ave and you should see the BP immediately.  Or after turning off of 670, drive about a mile and then turn left at Selzer Road and travel about a half mile to a BP Station that sits on the right-hand side.

Returning your rental car back to the airport isn’t difficult.  As you drive back on the road that approaches the airport, you will notice overhead signs directing you to the rental car return turnoff – to the left-hand side.  Simply follow those signs to get your rental vehicle back to the appropriate rental car return area.  Of course, we always recommend handing the keys over to the car rental company employee if at all possible.  Someone should sign off to the receipt of the vehicle, and the condition of the vehicle as well.
