Cologne Bonn Airport Car Rental
What is known today as the Cologne Airport began its existence some 70 years ago as so many airports begin - as a military airfield. Over the years the facility was turned into a commercial facility, and the rest is history. 2010 saw some 10 million passengers served by the airport in Cologne. Projections continue to look forward to continued growth over the coming years. The airport is generally regarded as spacious, clean and wonderfully laid out in terms of passenger movement throughout the facility.
The airport hosts four global car rental companies - Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Avis. Each car rental desk is located in Terminal 1 at the arrivals level. Cars are actually parked in a multistory rental car park on the first level.
Getting out of the airport is not too difficult. You will travel on west on KennedyStrasse (Kennedy Road) to exit the airport access roads. If traveling to Cologne, take the exit onto A59 toward Koln (Cologne) and drive for slightly less than 3 km. Continue on A559 for an additional 6.7 km until you approach an exit B55. Overhead signs may be marked "Zentrum" meaning "Center". Take B55. This exit will put you on the Deutzer Ring on the B55 driving West towards Cologne. In about 1 km, you will make a loop and continue on Severinsbrucke as you pass over the Rhine River (Picture below) into the heart of Cologne.
If traveling to Bonn from the Cologne Airport, you will pull out on onto the Kennedystraße and drive South on A59. Drive about 17 km, then take exit to Highway 56, towards Bueul or Hangelar. Watch for blue signs overhead directing you. You will come to a "T", where you can travel left (West) to Bonn or right (East) to Hangelar. Total estimated driving distance is about 24 km.
Traveling back to the airport when returning your rental car, you will essentially reverse the directions above. Watch for blue signs planted next to the road directing you to Flughafen, or Airport. If traveling back from Cologne, less than 5 km from the airport, you will see blue signs planted next to the road pointing you to a Tankstelle, or gas station. The fueling station is a Shell station on the right hand side. Fueling here will save you a little money in re-fueling your rental car before returning it to the airport. If traveling back to the airport from Bonn, we generally recommend that you re-fuel as close as you can to the city of Bonn. We aren't aware of a gas station close to the airport coming from Bonn on I59.
The Cologne Airport is not lacking in things to eat and places to shop. The Rendezvous Piano-bar is situated in the T1 / B Departures area and offers a pretty neat experience while waiting at the airport. Or maybe Kolsch and Co. near the Burger King in T2? There is also a Subway further down the aisle, but still in T2 departures area. For those looking for duty-free shopping there are two choices. One is in T1, at the Starwalk. The second is in T2 in the departures area. Various other shops line the hallways throughout the facility.
Fortunately, travelers thru the Cologne-Bonn airport have a place to stay right on the airport premises. The Holiday Inn Hotel at the Koln airport does offer weary travelers convenience, but be warned that prices will be substantially higher at the airport facility vs. an equivalent hotel off the airport premises. Prices generally begin at € 150 and go up from there - depending on the amenities that you choose. The hotel does offer a free shuttle service back and forth, so you may be able to time your stay in a way to avoid a day's worth of car rental. So crunch the numbers and see what works for you.
