Chicago Midway Airport Car Rental

Chicago Midway Basics.....

The Chicago Midway International Airport is O'Hare International Airport’s quiet sister, serving Chicago, Illinois as the second-biggest airport in the city and state. This airport is known as a mini-hub for Texas-based Southwest Airlines. In the spring of 2010, construction on Concourse A culminated in a new food court, walkway, and viewing. At the Chicago Midway International Airport, you’ll find all the amenities you’d expect from a city airport, like various sit-down restaurants, a dozen wheelchair accessible power stations, and rental car agencies, too.  So, if you love Chi-town but don’t love the bustle of huge airports, skip O’Hare and opt for the Chicago Midway International Airport instead.

Chicago Midway Airport Car Rental.....

Several car rental companies set up shop at the Chicago Midway.  These include Avis, Alamo, Dollar, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, National and Thrifty.  The desks for these companies are situated on the lower level of the terminal.  You may pick up your vehicle, and drop off your vehicle, on Level 2 at the airport parking garage.

Leaving the Airport and heading into Chicago isn't as difficult as one would think.  You do have to make a couple of decisions, however.  First, you meed to get on Cicero and travel North to leave the area.  Drive about 1.5 - 2 Miles and then turn right to travel north on I-55.  Drive for about 7 miles until you hit Highway 41.  Turn left and travel North on 41 into Chicago.

When returning your vehicle, you will essentially travel the same way back to the airport - there are actually several other options, but I-55 is probably the best route.  From I-55, you will go South on Highway 50 to get back to the airport.  On Highway 50, you will find several gas stations within a couple of miles of the airport.  Any of these would make good choices to re-fuel your rental vehicle before returning your car.

 Midway Airport Amenities.....

When you first enter the Chicago Midway International Airport lobby, dining options will seem slim, but there will be more places to eat once you make it through security. There, you’ll find options like Harry Caray's Seventh Inning Stretch, Tuscany, Lalo's Mexican Restaurant, Miller's Pub, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Reilly's Daughter, Gold Coast Dogs (Delicious Dogs!! See picture below), and over a dozen more.

Staying after dinner for an early morning flight? After about 10:30 p.m., let the airport staff know you want to sleep at the airport and they’ll set up a bed for you! No joke! In the evenings, the staff members set up about 100 cots in Concourse C that anyone is welcome to use. At this concourse, the staff will give you a blanket, pillow, and little kit, too. The blankets are as thin and the pillows as small as you’d expect, but this could save you a lot of money on a local hotel.

If you’re not afraid of flying, you’ll get a kick out of taking off and landing at the Chicago Midway International Airport. The airport is basically a letter X inside of a rectangle inside of a neighborhood. As you look at the startlingly close Chicago houses, you’ll feel like you’re about to go splat against the windows like a confused bird, until the plane suddenly takes off safely into the sky. If you’re a jumpy passenger, you may want to avert your gaze.

What are some less scary advantages to flying via the Chicago Midway International Airport? As we mentioned, it offers accessible power stations to recharge your gadgets. You can also pick up souvenirs to bring home from Life is Good, Chicago Treasures, Hallmark, or 9 other retail stores. Like many small airports, it doesn’t take long to walk from where you are to where you need to be, especially with moving sidewalks to help.

When it comes to disadvantages, one oft-mentioned issue is the lack of free WiFi. Travelers who want this service must buy it through Boingo. The Chicago Midway International Airport is by no means dirty, but it has a retro look that isn’t exactly impressive. It’s also located on the South Side, an area some locals consider dangerous.
