There really is only one commercial airport servicing the Prince Edward Island - the Charlottetown Airport. The airport terminal was built in the mid-80's and the airport currently offers services to Halifax, Montreal, Boston, New York, Detroit and Toronto. Connections are available worldwide, of course. Currently, the airport moves about 250,000 - 300,000 passengers per year. The annual passenger count has risen consistently over the last 10 - 12 years. The airport is not large at all, but it is very easy to get your rental car in and out of the airport area.
Charlottetown Airport Car Rental.....
The airport currently has four companies offering car rental services. Avis, Budget, National and Hertz each have desks set up in the Arrivals area of the terminal. Thrifty and Discount Car and Truck Rentals each offer a 'meet and greet' service there as well. In this arrangement, car rental customers meet the car rental representative at the terminal. The customer is then transported to the car rental company's business away from the Charlottetown Airport. When you run booking requests on our booking engine, you will find that the cheaper vehicles are off airport - meaning they offer a shuttle service described above.
Leaving the Charlottetown Airport in your rental car, you will find the exits pretty easy to navigate. Via one of the airport access roads you will soon 'T' in to Brackley Point Rd, aka PE-15. Drive about 3 km, then veer right on St. Peters Rd. As a side note, there is a gas station right at this intersection, so this would be a great place to re-fuel when returning your rental vehicle back to the Charlottetown Airport. Anyway, as you veer on to St. Peters Rd, you will travel about 1 km until you reach the city center of Charlottetown. Below you can see Charlottetown on a very, very cold winter night.
Charlottetown Airport Amenities.....
First things first, there is Wi-Fi available in the Charlottetown Airport. The bad news is that it's not free. The current rate is $7.50/Hour, or $13.50/day. Eating options are few here, but that's to be expected given the size of the facility. A restaurant called "Budley's" serves up soups and sandwiches and a snack bar is situated in the post-security area for those wanting a quick snack to eat before (or take on) the flight. Other than these amenities, there's not a whole lot going on at the airport.
Hotels Near the Charlottetown Airport.....
There is a hotel right across the road from the Charlottetown Airport called the Sherwood Motor Inn. I can't speak to the cleanliness, or the service provided, but I do know that it's convenient. If you exit the airport on Sherwood Rd, you will turn left and travel a few hundred meters. The smallish, white, one-level hotel is on the right hand side of the road. However, if you exit on Maple Hills Ave, turn right and the hotel will be on the left. The rates are cheap, but be wary - you may get what you pay for.
Car Rental Driving Distances.....
For those traveling from the airport to Charlottetown, you can expect a 5 km drive into the heart of the town. For those flying into Charlottetown, and driving somewhere else, we have compiled some nearby towns and the driving distances needed to get there. These distances are from the airport and only estimates, and we generally recommend that you reserve a GPS when booking a rental car.
Stratford, Prince Edward Island, Canada 11 km. Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, Canada 10 km. Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada 36 km. Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada 59 km. Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island, Canada 27 km. Stanhope, Prince Edward Island, Canada 20 km.
If you have time, a great way to get to know the Prince Edward Island a little better is to take the Taste the Town eating/walking tour. The tour is available on Mondays thru Saturdays, and for a little less than $40 you can taste some PEI lobster, chips, ice cream, fresh oil, beer and vodka, and mussels - to name a few. To get to the begging of the tour you need to travel in your rental car to Founders Hall. The best way to get there is to take Riverside Dr (also known as Trans-Canada Hwy) all the way to Water Street and turn left. Founders Hall (See picture below) will be a two-story brick building on the left side of the road.
Rental Vehicle Types Available at the Charlottetown Airport.....

Also, before you finalize payment, check out the add-ons available for this location, such as additional drivers and various children's seats for your journey.
