Canberra Airport Car Rental

Airport Basics.....

The Canberra Airport is an international airport located in the city of Canberra in New South Wales.  Currently the airport ranks in the top 10 in terms of passenger traffic.  Although the airport is identified as an international airport, the current operations include only domestic air travel, primarily to other NSW areas and to Queensland airports such as Cairns and Brisbane.

Canberra Airport Car Rental.....

Car rental companies currently offering services at the Canberra Airport include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.  These companies each have desks located at the central terminal area in the arrivals area of the terminal, near the arrivals hall access.

After picking up your rental car, exiting the facility is not too difficult.  You will simply taxi around the Terminal exit roads and proceed either Southeast or Northwest on Pialligo Ave, depending on your final destination.  For those traveling to Canberra, you will travel Northwest after hopping on Pialligo Ave.  Drive less than 2 km, and continue straight until Pialligo turns into Morshead Dr.  Go thru three traffic circles and proceed to a fourth, larger traffic circle and go west on Kings Avenue.  You will notice the Lake Burley Griffin to your right and left as you cross over the top of it.  Kings Avenue will take you straight into the city center.  Getting back from the Canberra city center to the airport is pretty simple as well.  Simply reverse the directions above.

When returning your rental car back to the Canberra Airport, you will have an option to re-fuel near the airport.  A Caltex fueling stations sits on 10 Tyson Dr., a drive upon entering the airport area.  Their phone number is Phone: 02 6230 4755.  Fueling costs at this station are probably going to run a little higher than average, but most likely less than the cost charged to you by rental car companies upon returning your rental car without fuel.

Airport Amenities.....

There aren't actually a ton of dining choices at the Canberra Airport.  The Tuk Chop is a sandwich shop located in the upper level terminal area.  Sitting next to the Tuk Chop is a Hudsons Coffee shop.  Pick up a quick caffeine boost before boarding the plane at Hudsons.  A currency exchange, Travelex, opens every day from 6 am to 7 pm.  They are situated on the upper level as well.

As far as Wi-Fi options area available at the airport, the Qantas Club has free Wi-Fi offerings.  The Qantas club (see pic below) is in the departures level and is open from 5 am until the last airplane departs.  Outside the Qantas Airport, free Wi-Fi is not available.

Car Rental Driving Distances.....

For most folks landing in the Canberra Airport, the final destination is Canberra itself.  The city center is about 8 or 9 km from the airport and the drive is fairly easy.  For others folks, we have compiled a list of nearby towns and/or attractions and the driving distances to get to them.  These are from the airport car rental area and are estimates only.  For exact driving directions, we generally recommend that you reserve a GPS when booking your rental car.  Often the GPS rentals are fairly cheap, and sometimes they're even free - depending on the car rented.

One place of interest that might be worth checking out is the Australian War Museum.  Admission is free and the shop opens up at 10 am and closes at 4:50 pm Monday thru Saturday.  The museum is closed on Sundays.  The Memorial is labeled by many as well-thought out and touching, in terms of the sacrifice offered by Australian men and women throughout the years.  Travel via Morshead Dr, like you're going to the city center, but stay on Morshead across Kings Avenue and continue on as the road then turns into Parker's Way.  Watch for brown signs on the right hand side of the road, and then make the traffic circle to get on Anzac Parade Rd.  Travel straight to the memorial.
