Bilbao Airport Basics.....
The Airport in Bilbao, Spain services between 3 and 4 million passengers every year to local areas such as the city of Bilbao, Barakaldo and Portugalete. See car rental travel distances below. The airport is located in the Northern regions of Spain, situated less than 4 km's from the Bay of Biscay. The airport is also about a 3 1/2 drive to Gijon to the West, down the coast.

Driving out of the Bilbao Airport with a rental car can be a fun experience. There are many sites to see in Northern Spain, and many folks like to travel with rental cars, so they can have control over their travel plans. If you are traveling to the city of Bilbao, you will want to taxi out of the airport and hop on the N-633 road going East to Bilboa, and continue on for a little over 1 km. Take the BI-631 ramp and continue South - watch for white and blue overhead signs directing you to Bilbao.
From there, you're on your way to many Spanish town choices. Zaragoza, Madrid, Burgos, and Logrono to the south. Gijon and Vigo to the West. Barcelona lies to the Southeast. (By the way, many folks recommend visiting the Cathedral in Burgos. It has been re-modeled recently and sounds spectacular.) However, before you board your rental car and head out of Bilbao, check out the Guggenheim Museum in the town of Bilbao. As the crow flies, the museum sits about 4-5 km from the airport. However it will take you 10-15 minutes to get there via a rental car. Here are some other towns you may want to visit, and the distances to them. Watch for Gabai fueling station on right (this would be a good place to fuel up on your way back to the airport!). Although there are plenty of shortcuts to get into the Bilbao City Center, we generally recommend that you follow the signs and follow BI-631 until you enter a traffic circle, then veer right.
Bilbao Airport Amenities.....
Besides car rental, the Bilbao airport many other amenities. Shops and restaurants are plenty, just like any airport. There are 5 ATM's throughout the facility, a VIP lounge and informational services throughout as well. Several shops for souvenirs and general merchandise. Remember, foreigners whose residence is not in Spain, are able to claim a refund on the Value Added Tax portion of the purchase they made on items purchased in Spain. A Value Added Tax refund shop exists within the Bilbao Airport
There are at least five good hotels near the airport. These include the Hotel Andrea, Holiday Inn Express Bilbao, Hotel Artea-Errota, Hotel Restaurante Loui and the Hotel Tryp Sondika. Throughout the city, of course, there are dozens more. Many consider the Arriaga Suites, located in Casco Viejo on the edge of Old Town, to be an excellent choice for the money.
The Bilbao Airport is generally regarded as efficient, and fast, especially when it comes to clearing passengers thru immigrations.
