Airport Basics.....
In 2006 the to-be-called Schoenefeld airport began expansion, scheduled to be completed in 2012. When completed, the Tegel Airport will close and the Schoenefeld Airport will then be named Brandenberg Airport. The new airport will have a capacity of up to 27 million passengers immediately. In fact, the airport will have future capacity of 45 million passengers per year. Until then, the the Brandenberg airport is completed, the Schoenefeld airport and the Tegel Airport are still in operation. See the pic below for the future Brandenburg Airport.

Renting a car at the Schoenefeld Airport is a relatively easy thing to do. You can currently rent a car from at least seven different car rental agencies. These include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Motorhomes CC-Mobile. Each of these companies will provide car hire customers a quality company to work with. Currently, the rental cars at the Schoenefeld airport are situated across from Terminal A on the ground level.
Booking a car rental in advance from the Schoenefeld airport is generally cheaper than waiting to book the car at the airport. You will pretty much guarantee yourself a higher cost without previous recommendation. Also, we at Eurocarrental.net generally recommend a rental car powered by a diesel engine (instead of gasoline powered) if at all possible. Sometimes drivers can save up to 40% on fuel savings with this option.
The Schoenefeld Airport (Future Brandenburg) sits about 24 km form the Berlin City Center. To get there when exiting the airport roadway, you will hop on the Waßmannsdorfer Chaussee. This is a road that will run East into the Federal Motorway 113. Continue on the 113 for about 10 km until the road changes to A100. You will drive on the A100 for about 4 km, then take the exit 20 towards the Tempelhofer Dam. Turn right onto the Tempelhofer Dam and watch signs as you travel toward the city center of Berlin.
To return to the airport, you will generally reverse the directions above. Remember to re-fuel before returning your rental vehicle. An ESSO station sits across the road from the Schoenefeld Airport. Also, If renting a car and driving for the first time on the Autobahn, remember that driving during rush hours essentially eliminates the option of driving very fast, and a few areas on the Autobahn DO have speed limits.
