Bergen Airport (BGO) is the second busiest in Norway with over 5 million passengers going through each year. Just like the airport being the second busiest, the city of Bergen is the second largest in all of Norway. The population in and around Bergen is at 388,000. It's in the southwest coast of Norway and is considered a very important cultural center for the surrounding region. It was honored with the label, “European Capital of Culture”.
It has also one of Europe's largest ports. It hosts the Bergen International Festival every year and the Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the oldest in the country. They also have a lot of amateur wind and brass bands that compete regularly at Grieg Hall. Because of this, the city is also host to the Brass Band Championships of Norway every winter. Bergen is also very active sports wise with two professional football teams and has great interest among the locals and throughout the country.

There are over 100 cars to choose from the 5 rental agencies at the airport. In addition, during the winter, you always will receive your car warmed up and the windows ice free. The companies include Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Avis and Hertz.
Getting your rental car out of the Bergen airport and on your way to Bergen is not difficult. You should count on an 18 Km drive from the airport or approximately a 30 minutes.
After picking up your car, head out of the airport on Flyplassvegen going towards Lilandsvegen/Fv176. You'll immediately get on Fv176 and follow it out. There will be yellow directional signs on the side of the road that will point you toward Bergen. At the traffic circle, be sure to make the first exit off onto Rv580. There will be a clear yellow overhanging sign directing you towards Bergen. Drive along and at the next turning circle that you will enter, make the first exit on this circle to continue on Rv580. Stay on this road for the next 9 km and you will also pass through 5 turning circles.
Rv580 turns into Fritz C. Riebers veg/E39 which is a partial toll road. Follow this for 3.3 km staying on E39. At the next traffic circle, you'll want to take the second exit and get on Fjøsangerveien/E39. This is also a partial toll road and you'll follow it along for another 3.9 km. Stay on Fjøsangerveien/E39. There will be a fork in the road and you'll want to stay to the left to remain on the highway. By this time, you'll be entering the city. On your right, there will be a large building with a big yellow banner that says Brucke on it. You'll want to make a right after the building on Lars Hilles gate. This turns into a one lane road.
Keep going and it turns into Foreningsgaten and then turns into Vaskerelven/Fv257. Then make a right with your rental caron Engen and another right on Øvre Ole Bulls plass. Take the 1st right onto Øvre Ole Bulls plass. One more right and you're in the center of town. There's a lot of shops, cafes and parks to enjoy.
Driving back to the airport, remember to fuel up before returning. There is a Shell Service station and a McDonald's restaurant about 6 km from the airport. I believe this is your last chance for fuel before returning to the airport.

Car Rental Types at the Bergen Airport.....
SUV's, minivans and minibuses, cheap compact cats, luxury cars, and regular sedans are all generally available at the Bergen Airport. Typically, any rental car in Norway is fairly pricey. So don't be alarmed. This may be due to the fact that other forms of transportation such as rail and well-designed bus routes that are common across other European countries are not really a focus in Norway. Less competition for ground transportation after flights may allow car rental companies to increase pricing. I honestly don't know the reason. Maybe everything in Norway is expensive. Regardless, using a European Rental Car comparison booking engine will help somewhat.
Thanks for shopping with Eurocar Rental. We hope you enjoy your stay in Norway and in Bergen Car Rentals in particular.
