Belfast City Airport Car Rental

Airport Basics.....

The Belfast City is often referred to as the George Best Belfast Airport, or the "George Best".  The airport is a pretty large player in the area, running nearly 3 million passengers thru the turnstiles in 2010, with projections to beat that in the year 2011.  The airport sits about 4 km due East from the city center of Belfast.  Much passenger traffic historically handled by the Belfast International Airport over the years has now been assumed by George Best.

Belfast City Car Rental.....

There are four car rental companies situated at the Belfast City Airport.  These currently include Hertz, Avis, Budget and National.  Both the Car Rental area and the Car Return area sit right adjacent to the primary terminal building.

To get to Belfast from the Belfast City Airport, hop onto the A2, a major roadway in North Ireland.  Drive a little less than 2 km's until you come to an overhead green and blue sign.  The sign will point you to stay left on the A2 exit to the City Centre.  Next watch for green signs as road splits again.  Stay right, remaining on A2 over the Bridge End Flyover.  Continue on for about 4/10 of 1 km.  Pass Maxol Fueling station on right (this might be a great place to re-fuel before returning your rental car back to the airport later).  Continue to watch for green signs on the side of the road, directing you to the city centre as you cross the Queen's Bridge.  Veer left after the Queen's Bridge onto A20, then turn right onto May Street downtown.

When returning your car from Belfast, look to cross the Queen's Bridge on the A2 roadway.  Watch for Airport signs and continue straight after crossing the bridge.  Veer left at the lights to continue onto A2.  Watch for signs overhead and continue to the George Best.  Finally, turn left onto Airport Road.  Green signs will point the way.  Again, remember to fuel up in Belfast, as there are no fueling stations on A2, going back to the airport.

Airport Amenities.....

Several restaurants have shops set up at the Belfast City Airport.  The Harvest Market is the largest restaurant after the security clearance area.  They serve pizzas, lasagnas and salads.  If you are needing a little drink to calm you down, try the Bushmills, serving blended whiskies and a whole bunch of malts.  The Bushmills sits adjacent to the Harvest Market.  If you need a little jolt, then check out the Expression near the internet zone.  You can pick up a fresh cup of coffee or specialty coffee drink before your flight.

For shoppers looking for some duty free merchandise, check out the WorldDutyFree shop.  They have the typical duty free merchandise you are looking for, including perfumes and wines.

You will find a currency exchange booth near the arrivals doors on the ground floor.  With more than 70 currencies, you should find the currency you're looking for.  Finally (and most important for most travelers) is the issue of Wi-Fi.  The Belfast City Airport has partnered with the BtOpenZone.co.uk to provide the airport with Wi-Fi services.  That is a fancy way of saying that it's not free.  Check out their website for details - you can buy per minute services or subscribe on a periodical basis.
