Airport Basics.....
The Avignon Airport was created in the late 1930's with the first flight out of the airport taking off not long thereafter. The airport is actually located in the Avignon city in France and is about an hour's drive from Marseille, a city sitting to the South on the Mediterranean Sea. The Avignon Airport is a very short drive from the centre of Avignon, about 8 km. The airport is situated just off the A7 and E714 Motorways. Destinations from the Avignon Airport currently include Southhampton, Exeter, Birmingham, London City and Figari. Flights arriving into the Avignon Airport are the same as the destination cities listed above. Flybe, CityJet and Holiday Flights are the airlines servicing those flights.
Avignon Airport Car Rental.....
There are currently four car rental companies with desks at the Avignon Airport. These include Europcar, Avis, Hertz and National/Citer. All are prestigious, strong companies and should provide a great car at a reasonable price.
Getting out of the Avignon Airport is not too difficult. You will simply taxi around a round-a-bout as you leave the airport, and head for the Route De Marseille (Motorway N7). Near the city outskirts, you will eventually travel into Bd Saint Michel. Take the left and then a right at the Rue De La RePublique. From there, you will have a beautiful little 1 km drive right into the heart of the city. The city center of Avignon is really special. If you're on business in Avignon, make time to visit. If you're looking for a good cheap hotel near the Avignon Airport, you might try the Hotel Paradou (actually a Best-Western-Owned Hotel) just a stone's throw from the airport. With basic rooms, and decent swimming pool and within walking distance from the airport, there's not much to find offensive here. It's not the Hotel d'Europe, but it's not bad. Pick up your rental car, drive a few hundred feet and you're at the front door.
Avignon Airport Amenities.....
The airport in the Avignon region is just plain small. There are four small restaurants - The Courte Paille, the Mamma - Mia, and the restaurant at the above-mentioned Paradou Hotel. There is also a small restaurant called the 'le Petit Prince' offers a few snacks and sandwich type meals to passengers waiting to board the airplane. For those looking to buy something local, there is a shopping center called the Achat-Avignon. Their wares include fashion trinkets, souvenirs and other collectibles.
