Augusta Airport Car Rental

Augusta Regional Airport Background…

The City of Augusta heard about the United States Army Air Corps’ defense plans for World War II that included the creation of various military flight schools across the nation. The city decided to reach out to the military and made a plan to buy some land and build an airplane in Augusta for the military. In 1941, an agreement had been made, nine hundred acres of land was purchased and construction had begun. The government stepped in and took full control of the facility when the threat of World War II became a reality. The place was named Bush Field and the number of trainees was doubled.

The City of Augusta regained control of Bush Field in 1950 and worked tirelessly to make it one of the busiest airports in America by 1964. The airport kept its original name until 2000, when it was renamed Augusta Regional Airport at Bush Field. Over the last few years the airport has serviced about half a million people each year.

Inside the Augusta Airport

Augusta Regional Airport Car Rentals…

From seven in the morning until eleven at night on weekdays and from nine in the morning until seven at night on the weekends, seven car rental companies offer their services to the passengers of Augusta Regional Airport. If you fly often throughout the United States then you’ll probably notice six of them; Avis, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, National and Thrifty. The seventh, Ace, is also a nationally acclaimed agency but a little lesser known. Regardless of status, all seven counters can be found within the baggage claim area of the main terminal. If you’re having a hard time locating them-you never know how airports are going to move things around during renovations-simply take a look at a directory or ask a nearby employee for assistance.

The actual car rental parking lot sits to the North of the terminal.  To get to it, simply walk out of the North entrance near the rental car counters.  Pass the commercial vehicles parking area to the rental cars.  The parking area is isolated from the regular airport parking and will be easy to find.

Augusta Airport to Augusta Downtown Directions…

Once you’ve gotten the keys to your car and checked it over, you’ll be ready to leave the airport. Take a right-hand turn out of the parking area and travel a couple hundred feet until you get to the Doug Bernard Pkwy. Turn right on it and after about 5 miles, you will come to a stoplight on US-25 S.  Take a left. Drive about a mile, and then turn right on Olive Rd and drive into the city center.

Augusta Airport Car Rental Return…

If you travel back the way you left (as above), we generally recommend that you fill up at the most convenient gas station available.  There aren’t any gas stations that we know of right next to the airport.  But if you forget to re-fuel coming out of Augusta, you might try the gas station next to the Huddle House at 3325 Mike Padgett Highway.  Or there is a Sunoco Gas station across from the Waffle House on 3408 Mike Padgett Highway.  But the closes two gas stations sit on the corner of 4101 Windsor Spring Rd and Tobacco Road, about a mile from the airport area in Hephzibah.

After filling up the tank, simply turn towards the airport and get your car back to the same rental car parking lot from which you originally picked it up.  Follow the little signs and drive past the terminal.  The rental car lot is on the right-hand side, just after the terminal.  When you pull in to the lot, you will see the little rental company signs directing you to the correct rental company parking area.

Other Airport Amenities…

The airport offers a free Wi-Fi service that is accessible throughout the terminal along with a free shuttle to and from the parking lots and free baggage carts to use at your convenience. You’ll find the typical variety of shops and restaurants as well as a postal service and ATM. The airport offers everything you could possibly need to make your stay as pleasant as reasonably possible.

Other Car Rental Options at Augusta Regional Airport…

Did I mention that Augusta is the second largest city in Georgia? A GPS system is a very handy tool for visitors to the area. You can pick one up at any of the car rental companies at the airport for just a little bit more money per day, usually around ten to fifteen more dollars.

Finally, you will find that you can rent just about any type of vehicle at the Augusta Airport.  SUV’s, economy cars, luxury cars, and vans of all sizes are generally available for hire at the airport.  Make sure that you book early, however, to make sure that what you want is available when you get there.
