Alta Airport (ALF) is just northeast of Alta on the south shore of Altafjord. It's a small airport in size with one runway, but very busy. It serves more that 300,000 passengers each year and is Finnmark's busiest airport.
Alta officially became a city in 1999. It becomes larger and larger every year population wise. Alta, the biggest town in Finnmark has a lot to do. It has the mountains, rock carvings, midnight sun and the northern lights. If you'd like to try your hand at dog sledding or snowmobiling, you have many opportunities available. The rock carvings are 2000 to over 6000 years old and Alta has a spectacular Northern Light observatory that has given the town the nickname “ The Northern Lights Town”. Alta has many opportunities to shop and also has one of the largest research and educational centers in Northern Norway. It's the home of Finnmark Municipal University with around 2000 students.
Alta Airport Car Rental.....
Renting a car can really give you the freedom to explore the country at the pace you want, to maximize your enjoyment. The following rental agencies (located near the baggage claim area) that are available at the Alta Airport include Alta, Budget, Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
If driving to the town of Alta, you will find that it's a very quick drive from the airport to the city center. It's a big 4.9 km and approximately a 6-10 minute drive without any traffic.
After getting your rental car, make your way out of the airport onto Flyplassveien. Follow Flyplassveien until you get to Altaveien/E6. When you arrive, make a left to get on this road. You can't really miss it. Keep going and you'll arrive at a big turning circle. Turn off on the first exit continuing on ltaveien/E6. There will be a big red house on the other side of the circle. You want to turn before the house. You'll drive for 3.4 km and pass through two traffic circles. On the third traffic circle, you can go anywhere that you want because you have arrived in the center of town.

The airport is very small and therefore doesn't offer a lot in extras while waiting for your flight. It does however offer basic shopping and dining experiences to make your wait enjoyable and comfortable. The cafeteria and a kiosk that is located inside the terminal, serves cold and hot sandwiches, coffee, hot dishes, soft drinks and beer. At the kiosk, you can purchase all the basics you might need such as magazines, books, newspapers, beverages and snacks. And of course, souvenirs are also always on sale to remember your trip. Also, free wireless Internet is available at the airport for your convenience.
Hotels Near the Alta Airport.....
Altafjord Gjestegaard & Spa - This has been reviewed as a very nice hotel located just outside Alta. It has a spa, free Wi-Fi, very good local cuisine and spectacular views of the Fjord. Rooms have a TV and there is access to a jacuzzi or sauna. The restaurant prepares all meals with local produce that is always fresh and offers many Norweigian dishes such as king crab, Artic Char fish and reindeer. Thon Hotel Alta - The Alta is located in the center of town and has TV's, private bathrooms, Wi-Fi and a mini bar. The restaurant is actually Italian and serves mainly Italian dishes and pizza. Of course, there are many other restaurants and bars close by to meet your dining needs. In addition, the main shopping center in Alta is right there in the same building for your convenience. Best Western Nordlys Hotel Alta - The Best Western offers regional and local cuisine at the restaurant, sauna access and free Wi-Fi with the airport only being 10 minutes away. All rooms have cable, private shower and bath as well as a work desk. The restaurant serves many Norwegian specialties including reindeer.
Car Rental Driving Directions.....
Frankly, there aren't many towns near the airport to drive to, other than the town of Alta. There are some things to do in Alta, however. If you are a bird lover and watcher, there is a river outlet known as the Altaosen that is a very popular area for many wetland species that use this tidal area as a stopover. It is well worth the visit if you are in the area. The principle industry in Alta includes: education, public service and small industry. It's become famous for Norway's slate industry. Also, Alta has an Ice hotel that is the most northern of all European cities. If you are a football (soccer) fan, Alta is also the home of the Alta IF club.
