Airport Basics.....
The Almeria airport is a little less than 10 kilometers to the east of the region's capital city and can be found from the city of Almeria using the AL-14 road. The Almeria airport plays an integral role in the development of the area, as it's positioned in the middle of the bay of Almeria and about 5 miles from the city of Almeria. Thru the 1990's the Almeria airport grew fantastically and reached over 1,000,000 air passengers in 2000. However, recently, the numbers have declined. One could blame the global recession that has gripped Europe since 2007 or 2008. Below is a picture of the airport back in 1968.
Car Rental at the Almeria Airport.....
When exiting the Almeria Airport with your newly rented car, you'll have to circle around just a bit to get out of the facility an on a major road. There will be blue over-street signs signaling which roads you will need to drive on to get on the road to Almeria or Murcia. Watch your speed as you leave the facility - speed limit signs are posted. You will go thru a round-a-bout, then under a bridge as you approach N-334. Circle thru another round-a-bout in a counter-clockwise manner and you will then feed into N-334 National Road (AL-12 Carriageway). After hopping on the AL-12, the speed limit increases to 100 km/hr. Continuing West, on N-334 (AL-12), Almeria is about 8 km away. Drive directly in.
When returning your rental car from the Almeria into the Almeria Airport, you will reverse the directions above. Watch for painted directions on the street (AL-12) and for the signage near the road itself. As you exit off of AL-12, watch for speed signs as they decrease pretty quickly. As you enter the terminal, you will notice an over-head sign reading "rent-a-car" - follow the signs all the way back to the drop-off area. Drop off your car and you're good to go!

Hotels Near the Almeria Airport.....
One hotel that is near the Almeria Airport is the Barcelo Cabo De Gata, located about 8 km East of the airport. Most reports say that the food is pretty good and the rooms are spacious. The hotel is near the water, and from at least one side of the hotel, you should have a nice view.
Another hotel (although it maybe closer to a bed and breakfast) a little nearer the airport is the Los Arcos. This one sits in the area of El Alquain right as you drive out of the airport. It will be on the left hand side, about 2 km away form the airport on Carretera Níjar-Alquián Street. I know nothing about it, so enter at your own risk!
Finally, a hotel not necessarily near the airport, is the Gran Hotel Almeria. It's situated in downtown Almeria, near the water. So, the drive to this one is a little further than the others. A little more modern than some other hotels in Almeria, so if you're looking for something a little more Spanish, this probably isn't it. But it is downtown, nearer the water, in a neat part of town. There are more hotels down in this are than the Gran Hotel Almeria, so do a little research and see what works for you.

Types of Cars Available for Rent at the Almeria Airport.....
From the Almeria Airport, just about any type of car is available to rent. This would include SUV's, Luxury cars like Mercedes, Vans and 7-Passenger Minivans, Compact Cars and Intermediate Cars and Standard Vehicles. Many of the cars rented in Spain are powered by diesel motors, with manual transmissions. This a little different setup from American vehicles, where the majority are gasoline-powered automatics.
